first thing u have to check is there power at the pump when you switch ignition on, there maybe a break in wire somewhere, check voltage at both sides of the plug under the back seat u could have power 1 side but not the other (happend on my wagon), if thats ok take pupm out and test for power there, put volt meter on both the wire to make sure your getting power and ground feeds, if still no good then check feeds at the brown relay just above the fuse box, it is in the middle of 2 cylindrical silver 1's, again check feeds,

If you have v's at the pump then chances are the fuse, relay and wiring is all ok. I would say its the pump itself, I know you said you put a direct feed to that and it worked ok but just by removing it and refitting it can make them work again. I had the same issue on my 95 wagon a few years ago, I would take the pump out give it a few taps then it would work again for a while. Double check you have voltage at the pump connector refit the pump and see what happens. There have been a few cases were the wiring under the back seat has failed and needed replacing.

Fuel pump relay is a probability.
It's a bit of a pig to get to though.
That's what you're looking for, I believe they are all the same for classics.
It's located under the dash, drivers side, up above the fuse box.

If there's no voltage to the pump, and relay and fuse are all ok, i would look at the alarm system MY99 had a similar problem, cant go into to much detail in the public forum, but can point you in the right direction via PM.
