Default Faulty Key Fob

The other day my main key stopped locking and unlocking the car suddenly. I was stranded for a while as I could lock and unlock it but not start it (immobiliser) but got a lift to get the spare key and that worked fine. My keypad code is incorrect (rang my Subaru dealership to get the code, but the previous owner must have changed it and not written it down!) so couldn't use that to de-immobilise it.

Anyway I got the spare key which worked fine and I have been using this since. I changed the battery in the faulty key but it still doesn't work. Through various combinations of taking both the keys apart, it appears the circuit board bit doesn't work. Can I try reprogramming it, or do I need my keypad to work to do this?

If the circuit board is bust, do I need to take a replacement to reprogram to the dealership and re-program the code as well?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks
Andy

You are lucky that you have still got one working fob, to allow you to change the code.
A lot of people only find out they don't know it, when they need it.

As you've found out, you can re-program the fob easily. They are around the 30-35 quid mark from Subaru, or easy enough to obtain 2nd hand on here or ebay.

Good luck.

My spare key battery had gone flat, a replacment battery didnt give it life, so no working spare!.
Put the new battery in the current key, works fine, so now just need to sort the spare out.

Does it need re-programming since the battery had gone flat for so long?
or do I need a whole new key?

Sounds like they need reprogramming. It's easy enough. Shouldn't need a new key- they cost a packet.

Yeah read the prices for new keys, shocking.
Also read the re-programming setup, but have no idea about the key pad to type in the digits?
I have a standard Subaru alarm for a 05 Impreza, how did you re-programme it?

Do you want to use the pad or the key to reprogram?

Use the key in an ideal world, only have 1 button on the remote is what I have.
Read one solution about open door, shut door turn key x10 to on-lock, horn cherps.....didn't work lol.

All this for a stupid flat remote batter, and the key losses its memory.

What year Impreza do you have?
Where did you plug the key pad in to? Where you get the pad from anyway?

Mine is an 05 blob.
The keypad is located to the right of the steering wheel below the fog light buttons. It pulls down to show the keypad, the fuses are behind.
To program 2 keys using 1 working key (ie you have one working key and one with its memory lost).
Firstly make sure you have both keys on you with batteries in, and have the code below to hand or memorised.
Vet ib your car, lock the car using the working key, then unlock it and within 10 seconds press *17856*91*2# then press each key in succession and the alarm will sound each time then you should have programmed both keys.
Type the above code quite quickly else it will flash in rapid succession and you have to start again.
Hope this works.

Oh right a secret key pad lol
Do I not need to use my unique key serial number then? It's on a little metal plate on the spare key.
just use/type in the code you mentioned above then?

I read this all worked for you, when you have similar issue?

No, you can use either the code or key.
If you prefer you can type **xxxx*91*2# where xxxx is your pin code for the keypad.
Yes it worked for me, tried both methods.
Hope it works!

Use method B if you have no key to hand. Might be worth printing this text below so you have it in the glove box.

A. Using a working Radio Key:
- Arm and then Disarm the system using a working Radio Key.
- Within 30 seconds of disarming, type into the keypad- *17856*91*n# (where n is the total number of keys required to work the system)
- Press each Radio Key briefly in turn (the dash board LED will flash and the siren beep each time)
- Once the nth Radio Key has been programmed, you should be able to arm/disarm the system using any of the Radio Keys programmed.

It is essential that all Radio Keys required to operate the system are programmed together. Any keys not present during the programming sequence above will no longer operate the system.

B. Using the current PIN Code (if a working Radio Key is not available):
- Arm and then Disarm the system using the current PIN
- Within 30 seconds of disarming, type into the keypad- **abcd*91*n# (where abcd is the system’s PIN code and n is the total number of keys required to work the system)
- Press each Radio Key briefly in turn (the dash board LED will flash and the siren beep each time)
- Once the nth Radio Key has been programmed, you should be able to arm/disarm the system using any of the Radio Keys programmed.

The whole point of the keypad is, that its a backup to the fob. If a fobs not working, you use your PIN code to arm/diasrm the car.
