Default New age not boosting over 5000rpm

HI guys, I was wondering if you guys could help as the local garage has not succeeded in diagnosing my engine problem. I have a bug eye Subaru which is standard apart from a dump valve. Nov 2011 was having issues with MAF sensor, purchased a used one which never solved the problem so returned it. Dec 2011 car was due MOT and TAX so booked car in for MOT for the end of the month. Passed MOT but car was not giving any boost. Returned car to the garage and purchased new MAF sensor when diagnosed with MAF sensor issues. When the new MAF was fitted there was still no boost so returned back to garage for investigation. Turbo had seized due to a pipe getting blocked. Purchased a recon turbo and had garage fit it. Car is now boosting but only to around 5000rpm, so returned the car to the garage. ECU diagnose was miss fire cylinder 4. Mechanic checked the plugs and leads and said they looked new, which they where, check coil pack and said it were working fine. The mechanic has given up and said all he can do is just replace parts until the problem stops or drive the car until the problem gets worse and then he should be able to diagnose the problem. The issue with the car is that at 5000 rpm it feels like it’s on the limiter so I have to change gear and this is the same when I drop gears also that it won’t rev over 5000rpm. Before the car would rev up to 6500rpm or whatever the red line is. Has anybody had this problem and diagnosed the problem without swapping every part in the engine. I could really do with your help as buying and fitting the turbo has been really expensive and I don’t won’t to waste money on parts that still work. Any ideas?

Have you tried a new boost solenoid?

It sounds a bit like a lean running issue at high rpm, which could be fuel pump failing to provide the demand of fuel the engine has.

I think my next port of call would be to get it on a dyno and get some expert advise and go from there.

Hope this helps,

Graham

Get it on a dyno with a respected mapper who should be able to tell you where the issue is, it may even been the dump valve - try putting your std one back on first.

I agree with the others could possibly be a boost solonoid, I had similar problems with my bugeye, i had boosting issues and engine went in failsafe mode and after a few visits to the garage it was fixed. I would consider fitting a 3 port insread of 2 port just in case you want to upgrade your engine at a later date Also like Egine mapper stataed it could be worth fitting a walbro uprated fuel pump which arnt expensive and could also solve the problem. Both of these parts will not break the bank mate worth a go.

Its easy. Between the airbox and the strut top mount. Turn the plastic twisters and lift up the plastic cover. The soleniod is bolted to a bracket on the strut turret. There is a 2 port solenoid and a 3 port. Think yours will have the 2 port one. Search 2 port soleniod in the seach box at the top of the page for more info.

Id say definitely get the AFR's checked out, as EngineMapper said it sounds like it could running lean.

Default Every cloud has a silver lining

Thanks for all your help guys. Found out that my car had the big C.
Compression issues. Gutted , so sold the car to WBAC with 90k. They do buy any car, because mine was bearly starting and had to push start it when they had a look at it.

But every cloud has a silver lining.

Mine was a Silver WRX with 55k which has all the bits I wanted to add to my Blue WRX. Seats, sti Spoiler, Gold Alloys, Morrette head lights, tracker and ss exhaust with working a/c. Needs some shocks but other wise pretty clean for age and full service history to confirm the 55K.

Thanks again and hope I won't need any help with the Silver Surfer.
