Default water or coolant

hi, i've just been told that your not supposed to put water in an alloy engine as this rots them. i've been told your supposed to use coolant is this true and what type of damage can water cause can anyone help?

The coolant / anti freeze also acts as a corrosion inhibitor, I have heard of people knackering cast blocks by using 'neat' water with no coolant (basically the block rusts from the inside out)

Never heard of someone doing the same with an alloy block but why would anyone run an engine without coolant added to the water ?

Without coolant the steel bolts that hold the block together will rust.

In answer to your question, i feel you may have mis-typed or mis-heard what was said, neat water is indeed a no no, but some water mixed with neat antifreeze to a 50/50 combo is required, or you can but premixed stuff etc but again, this will have water in it.

so in short, neat water no, water/coolant yes

Water on its own f**ks up the engine and sludges up the radiator and heater matrix.

The antifreeze when diluted 50:50 is what we typically call "coolant". This contains corrosion inhibitor and this is what stops the alloy corroding with the steel, copper and brass which is what is inside the cooling system (along with rubber, silicone/neoprene seals and plastics which don't tolerate the acidity caused by the corrosion).

History lesson: Its this stuff that makes modern cars reliable...back in the 70's many high performance engines with an alloy block or head would have cooling issues....think Triumph stags, Jaguar V12s and Climax (imp).....it wasn't an engine fault it was was the lack of decent quality corrosion inhibitors and the lack of understanding of galvanic corrosion!

Infact lack of corrosion inhibitor was one of the reasons why Buick abandoned their alloy 215ci V8 engine!....which was later to be purchased by Rover

I,d imagine there could be issues with freezing this time of year if no antifreeze in the system which could easily cause leaks..

try taking it to somewhere that specializes in cooling systems i see you live near me in hull i live in york and i would take it to somewhere like

Autocool Radiators‎
Unit 36/The Raylor Centre/James St
York YO10 3DW
01904 438500

or maybe take it to a somewhere that specializes with scoobys, you could take it to a Subaru dealer,

1 in K T Green Ltd
Otley Road Pool in Wharfedale
Leeds West Yorkshire
LS21 3DA
T: 0844 662 6837

but it could be expensive, if some1 has been using just water it could be a lot of things best to get the whole system checked out by a specialist m8
