Juddering when moving off
Ok, so the car's been doing this a short while; basically, when she's cold I go to move off and the car judders a bit almost like the brakes have stuck to the discs a little like when you leave the car parked up for a bit.
The thing is, sometimes it does it when the car's not been parked up even for half a day.
I also get a slight knocking noise at lower speed as well, but last night, when pulling to a stop, the knocking carried on even though the car wasn't moving. Went out again later and she was fine. Very odd.
Having had two wheel bearings replaced in the past I know it's definitely not that, so any ideas what this could be being caused by?
Bit worried it's the front diff or a driveshaft (I'm hoping piston slap or knocking engine would be more evident!).
If it's the clutch that's fine - she's done 92,000 miles so is probably due a replacement at some stage, but I would have expected to feel clutch slip if that were the culprit and there doesn't appear to be any.
Oil temperature reads fine according to my gauges.
The car's a 2001 WRX Bugeye (full spec in the garage)

I would be thinking clutch - they are notorious for juddering and mine was juddering just before being changed with no obvious signs of slip. When it was removed the old one was down to the rivets on the friction material.
If you've done 92k on the factory clutch she's done extremely well, mine was nearer 50k

I'm not sure it's still the original guys, as I haven't had the car from new.
No documentation with it though to say clutch had been changed, and I've had her since 48,000 miles.
Bloody annoying actually as she's never missed a beat other than the odd expected wear and tear items and then in the last 2 months I've had a blown up pipe, cracked radiator and now this
Just to make this slightly more odd, tonight it was making an odd noise - almost ticking - as driving along. Quite quiet but still, worrying. Doesn't sound really awful, but worrying me enough as I never like unexplained noises!
Jon - would you be willing to have a quick chat on the phone? Just interested to see if the symptoms were the same? If not will get Dan @ Surrey Subaru Specialists to have a look on Thursday when he does my up pipe.

+1 for the full bore start off. My bug clutch was juddering and got it changed/uprated. kept the original friction plate thinking get it relined in the future. The plate was not excessively worn.

Haha, if it really is still the original clutch I'd imagine a full bore start will spank what's left of it!
Still not sure all these symptoms can be explained solely by clutch though?

Had a quick chat with my local dealer regarding the knocking noise - he reckons it could just be a belt needs adjustment, that would be much nicer tbh!
I'll give it a bit of a launch either tonight or tomorrow, and let you guys know if it cures it or not. Seeing Dan @ Surrey Subaru Specialists on Thursday night anyway so will hopefully find out what the issue is then if problems persist.

Well took it for a spin last night and this morning. Tried "launching it" spinning up all 4 wheels, which made absolutely **** all difference, BUT I did notice I had no burnt clutch smell, which I got in the past if doing that (which is why I don't tend to now lol)
It's more like a quiet rubbing noise now, and tried car in motion with and without clutch depressed as suggested on Surrey Scoobs, but no difference, squeaking remains.
I'm seeing Dan tomorrow night - hopefully he can confirm

Went over to Dan's last night; he drove and we both listened....the squeak is still there, whether clutch is in or not.
Sounds like it's coming from the front right hand side wheel.
Looked at the brakes, etc but nothing obvious.
It's almost starting to look like it could be a driveshaft / CV joint problem.
Annoyingly, we also found the reason for the bunny hopping I've been experiencing when backing off the throttle was down to a hole in the turbo inlet hose .
What a cack design those are on the OEM Subaru equipment. Still, it may mean the car will make about 340bhp or even a little more when it's properly mapped.
Harvey up pipe is on, but don't really want to go mad until:
a) These problems are resolved, and
b) It's mapped in properly

I replaced all my front end bushes with uprated polyurethane types and all the knocking over small bumps stopped and improved the handling to boot

The shocks are brand new BC coilovers with barely 5000 miles on them.
My best guess is driveshaft or CV joint adding all the symptoms up and having read up on several other forums on people experiencing similar issues.
The car's booked into my local dealer tomorrow morning; will go to my specialist for remedy if dealer are too dear (but they're normally pretty good); if it's £200ish I'll just pay to get it done as there's still the inlet to fit and the new up pipe to map in, and my mechanic is mad busy!

I had a juddery clutch and tried the full bore start to 'fix' it. It didn't work and a month or so later it started to slip and like previous poster when removed it had skimmed the rivet heads on the friction material so was pretty shot.

The squeaking noise was being caused by very slight play in the OSF wheel bearing.
Re-torquing the hub nut has gotten rid of the squeak until I can have the bearing repaired, but the clunking noise remains.
Last night, when starting the car from cold, the clunk actually started as I started the car - as if it's knocking on something as the engine turns over.
However, it doesn't knock in time to the engine, so really starting to **** me off as to what this is!

as for knocking,i know i said this in previous post but sounds like engine mounts/ gearbox mount etc? get all the mounts checked to rule it out. wats ur mileage again? and did u say the gearbox has never been out?

glad u got the wheel bearing diagnosed, it would be easier to get a second hand hub, as bearings are a bugger to fit and when fitted u dont know if the inside hub is damaged due to bearing fail(can damage bearings again if hub is damaged).

Shame import car parts don't stock rear ones really.
Oh and a visit to Charlie and the monster of green jolliness revealed the clunking knocking was the downpipe knocking on the gearbox, so all in all, rather good result!
