Haven`t got pictures, but it`s in the lower radiator hose... The big elbowed one...

Found this video for you... Ok, it`s not an MY00, but it shows where to look and how to change an Impreza Thermostat...... Hope it helps........

The two large pipes coming from the radiator, its the lower radiator pipe, remove the metal cap attaching to the pipe to the engine (from the engine) and the thermostat is inside.

Here is my old engine in my Jeep.

And here is the hole after the thermostat and pipe removed.

Easy enough if you have access to ramps, a lift, axle stands.

Soak bolts with WD40 before attempting to remove, use a DECENT socket, 6-sided ones are better than 12, less likely to slip and round the bolts.

So the Thermostat is on the hot side of the radiator (before the water goes through the rad) and the temperature sensor is on the cold side, that about right?

Wouldn't that mean that the temperature of the water leaving the block will actually be much higher than the temperature of the water entering the block??

I reckonn you have that the wrong way round: warm water rises, so will surely come off the top of the engine? That's why the t/h is often very much hotter than the bottom.

The job of the thermostat is to stay SHUT until the engine reaches working temperataure, then it opens to allow water to flow.

Only if it STICKS shut will an engine badly overheat, but that is rare, the fail-safe is for it to stick OPEN, which leads to OVER cooling, and the engine runs too cold.

Hmmm, interesting, can anyone confirm which way round the water flows?

Thermostat will stop cold water entering the block, until its reached temperature and the stat opens.

See the diagram below.
