Possible engine knock
Hi guys im new to scooby net but have owned a 2002 bug eye sti ppp for 2 years now.
Im starting to hear some noises in the monring that i am geting rather worried about. I think it could be a bottom end engine knock when i start the car from cold ( i.e overnight ) on partial throttle i can here a clicking noise which does go away when the engine is heated up.
i can also hear a wining coming from the engine which leads me to think the timing or auxilary belt needs to be tightened but does this need to be done to an exact torq specification
Any information would help as i understood this only happend to old scooby like the turbo 2000 and that the problem had been fixed on my model.

99%sure its piston slap mate,If it goes away when fully warmed up this will be the case.Dont worry about it,its not serious and enjoy your car.As for the whining not sure.Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along soon

Quite normal for a bit of piston slap first thing on a col morning. If it goes once its warmed up its not to much to worry about. The timing belt is self tensioned so may need a new tensioner. When was the belt last changed? Aux belts can be tightened.

The belt was changed last year about 12000 miles ago, the car only has 47000 on the clock that's y I'm worried as the car hasnt been run much, it is despatently needing a service which iv booked in next mondY to get everything and I mean everything done to it so I'm hoping this might remove a few of the kinks.

just had bottom end go on mine and it knocked at 2500rpm,caught it early and never blew it up.the new motor sounds a bag of spanners in the morning due to piston slap but after 5 mins quiet as a mouse.most scoobies had a bit of slap when cold and we have had a lot of proper cold nights lately.
