Default need help identifying subaru engine

hello all my subaru has just started doing the dreaded scooby knock, but instead of rebuilding the engine i'd thought i would source another engine, i have come across 1 that a bloke has forsale that he took in part ex. he doesnt know weather its a turbo or a non turbo, is there any way of telling by the engine numbers
i found these on the engine where the two crank cases meet on top
ab45
45aa 23323
many thanks laurence

Post some pics up of the engine as it will help to identify it.
The numbers you put up are (which are no help tbh),
AB,AA is the bore size.
45 is the crankcase match number for each half of the crankcase.
23323 is the main bearing size.

Hi Laurence,
A picture of the back of the right hand (drivers side) cylinder head would show if it has a coolant feed and oil return for the turbo.

Unable to zoom in on your pics enough but it looks like the engine has Version 1~2 heads and a Phase 2(1999 onwards) bottom end - possible mix and match job with the engine parts.

Although the pipework is missing, it has provision for oil feed, oil return and coolant feed for a turbo - it dont necc mean it has turbo internals though.
