The full seal and gasket kits are £400 alone.. factor in the original engine cost and labour..
Are you sure they are not just opening them up bang a set of bearings in and bolt it back up.

i can do most myself as worked in a few garages,so removing engine and the heads is not a ptoblem just finding someone to do me a recon with new crankshaft, even thou my engine never missed a beat or used any oil up until belt went, all i can put it down to is a failed idler but when i changed belt 4 months ago all idlers sounded fine and was no noise coming from the idlers or water pump.

I think his engine is a cdb anyway, you should diy it mate you can get a new sti crank rods and pistons and bearings for around £7/800 or you can buy a 2.1 stroker kit for £1400. there are cheaper ways of doing it as well, like a second hand crank, as long as it has not failed it will be fine, with a fresh set of bearings, yours might even still be ok, no reason why it should'nt, come to think of it i have a set of pistons for a Ra which is around the same year as yours, you can have for the cost of postage.

If you renew the crank then you really want one of the twin scroll items, these are cross drilled for better oil flow, but you may have to have your block machined to fit it....

just strip and get everything checked, you could be lucky and bottom end perfect so just set of heads, gaskets etc and away you go.i looked into sorting the bottom end out on my engine but its definately not cheap to do it properly.i will eventually build a forged lump when funds become available but in the meantime standard engine going in.

This is a possibility if the bores are ok. You need to measure the bores for taper and out-of-round as there will be a certain amount of wear. If it's in spec you can get away with a hone, if it's out of spec you'll need a rebore, hone and a size larger pistons.
edit - what's the mileage on the engine?

Don't try to do this on the cheap taking short cuts, you will regret it big time . Call Nick at Advanced Automotive for a top notch job at a reasonable price. It doesn't matter where u are he will arrange collection of your engine once removed.

Secondly, I'd get advice from relialble sources about what you should do.
I'm sure the old classic engines were non interference, so the valves and pistons could not mangle if the belt went...
If you've got a 95 engine, I'd ask the question, because boxers went from SOHC to DOHC in 96, so your engine might not be goosed...

Strip it , assume it was not knoking then new bearings. Replace with clean the bores, and check for size. New pistons STI or forged items, new Rods, again STI items , decent set of MHG's and then its good for 4 to 450 BHP and you have a recon engine. You could get a set of heads from Fleabay or on here to do a swap, plenty of people have old sets of WRX heads they will be giving them away afte STI V4 upgrades.
