depends if its standard or been mapped to a specific rating.

97 minimum really, but vpower or 99 is preferred on standard.

If you use the higher octane fuel perform an ECU reset. This will give a bit more power as the car adapts to the higher octane fuel.

higher octane is safer and gives more torque no matter what version you have with or without ecu reset, v power is the best of all not and many use anything else also carry some octane boost in case you can't find decent fuel (99)

you need an OBD gadget or lead laptop & software that plugs into your ecu via a port on your steering column, sold various places scoobyworld used to sell one

You could just disconnect the battery for a short while. Cheaper and easier.

Should do on the older JECS ECU. Either that or connecting the black and green connectors on the ECU with ignition on. It won't work on the Newage with the Denso ECU, that will require the procedure you recommended.

but with any performance engine the loss of torque and increased chance of det make the savings negligible and not worth the risk imo, unless it was specifically mapped for 95 i'd drive round very gently with my fingers crossed

Ran both my standard uk 97 cars for years on 95 ron. Tried several tanks of super unleaded and the fabled ecu reset, never noticed any difference in fuel consumption, smoothness or power output (maybe my bum dyno isn't that sensitive LOL)

When I fitted the Prodrive ECU's and supporting mods (decat etc) found there was a difference then. Not huge but enough to justify the extra cost.

It's the JDM cars which you have to be careful with and use the higher octane stuff, and of course the modified/mapped cars.

In the uk classics you can suit yourself. If you think it makes a diference then use it. If you find it doesn't then it is safe to use 95ron as they are mapped for it. Had to do a run back from Ipswich the other week on 95ron as the local tesco had run out of 99. The old girl returned 27mpg at "high motorway speeds"

Run it on SUL and also get it remapped - that will actually improve your MPG under normal driving

True but it's a MY98. Probably not be mappable.
