Drop the oil on the tranny & look for any metal. Sounds more like clutch related though.

Can you get gears with the engine off?

nope no gears at all it seems to be just locked up i drained the oil out, there were quite a few on shards or metal on the drain plug but no chunks came out like normal when a gearbox goes.

Sound like gearbox to me, draining the oil has probley moved all the swarf around.
Did you have the right oil, and the right amout in? If it was a clutch issue you should of been able to select gears with the engine off.
