Idle control valve. Not sure on an earlier model, but sits near the coil pack on a later classic. Can pop it off with 2 phillips head screws, pull out extending shaft, clean with brake cleaner, pop back in. Should hopefully sort any soot deposits out as well as your issue

Have you got a chav trumpet (i.e. VTA dumpvalve) that goes whoooosh everytime you change gear and makes McDonalds slags go weak at the knees. If so that could be your issue yes, as it is known to **** about with the idle.

SOLUTION;? Refit the standard re-circ valve.

Change the chumpvalve first before anything thing else. THEN report back with your findings

im searching for a replacement dumpvalve but a recirculating one! i had the car at home earlier idleing all funny so i popped the bonnet and actually saw the vent on the dumpvalve still slightly open, flicked the throttle and then it shut and went back to normal idle!
the car smells like its running rich if it was the maf would it not run lean?
