Default MAF'arama!!!

Been readin a bit about MAF sensors in the forums.

Ive read that MY99-00 sensors are weak.
Some say if you pull it out on idle it should cut out.
Some say this is not a conclusive test.
Some say DO NOT DO THIS under any circumstances

Well too late cos i pulled mine an it runs a bit funky after doin so,****!!!!!!

Id just like some clarification on how to test the sensor, i dont have anyone i know with a known good one. Is there a known resistance that it should read when tested with a meter???

Do i just buy a new one(green) as seen on ebay for £44. Im a newb to scoob ownership an im tryin get up to speed with regards to dos and donts an generally gettin it in good shape, after all i dont wanna be the chav in a battered classic an i just cant afford the simtek route mentioned!!!!

Cheers

Craig

Hi,

You're right about them being a known issue.

Pulling the plug on it isn't all that conclusive as a test as I tried it.

You can't get a new Genuine green stripe MAF for that price on E-Bay - I tried one & made it made the car over fuel like hell when cold so I know it wasn't Genuine quality !

My problem solved when bought a new genuine one - was around the £105 mark, & in hindsight wish I done it straight away

Hope helps,

No worries,

Yeah, dealers are the best place - although many Scoobie Specialists sell them now. Import Car Parts spring to mind.

Got mind from dealers, think retail price is around £105 +vat.

if the idle is lumpy, then changes are its a maf, know anyone local to you with the same year impreza, may be try there maf out.

in the long run a new maf is alot cheaper than a new engine

If you can make the west mids impreza meet at the end of the month ,i will take a spare for you to try if you like. https://www.scoobynet.com/west-mids-...0-10-11-a.html

The 99/00 mafs are weak but they tend to let go more often than not when an induction kit is fitted. If you use the std airbox they tend not to play up so much. In the last 3 years not had one go on either of my 2 cars. I have a nearly new maf on my current car ,but saw this the other day and had a bid

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3006041873...84.m1439.l2649

After cleaning the gause and element with brake cleaner and refitting it & a ecu reset it works just like my new one, with no fault codes or poor running.

If you're going to do any 'test' of your MAF that involves running the car with it unplugged, you should:
- unplug the MAF with ignition switched OFF
- start car up
- drive it around a tiny bit at idle speed

If the car doesn't run any differently than with the MAF plugged-in, it would more or less prove for certain your MAF is fubared, BUT getting the opposite result would definitely not prove your MAF is working 100% properly. The only way to do that would be to fit a known, definitely OK MAF on there and see if your car runs normally after, or hook the car up to an engine diagnostics machine and log readings off the MAF electronically.
