Default idling at 1500 rpm

Morning all,

Got a bit of a weird one here... although I'm hoping it is miraculously fixed next time i start the car...

went for a drive in my my93 classic wrx last night and all was good. no misbehaving from the car and i wasnt' giving it any stick really either, but when i pulled int he driveway at home, the car was idling at 1500 rpm. tried switching it off and starting again, btu it went straight back to 1500.
had a quick look but i couldn't see anythign obviously amiss, and the throttle seemed to be going right back to the stop properly...

can anyone tell me what i should be lookign at next?

one other thing... fitted the resonator delete pipe at the weekend, but the car's been running fine since then... couldnt' be anythign to do with that could it?

Have you tried carb cleaner in the throttle intake?

Haven't tried anythign yet mate! happened at about 10pm last night!

been reading up a lot on ISCV though (or IACV as they seem to be called on these!) and cleaning that out.
I'm thinking it's likely to either be that or an air leak.
Do you knwo if the ISCV is the beigey coloured thing in the top right of the last pic i posted?

You would be right, give that a clean and see if that makes any difference, common on mosty cars as they get clogged up

Im sure there will be a comprehensive guide online somewhere

Cool. thanks for that. I've found a few guides of sorts.. mostly seems to be a matter of checkuing therre's ntohing obstructin operation under the plastic cap, and if not, removing the whole thing and soaking it in wd40 overnight....

Could be air leak, especially as youve changed to a delete pipe and been messing in that area, hope you get it sorted

good point.. althoguh i would have thought that the leak would need to be between the throttle body and engine rather than further away fromt eh engine wouldn't it?

Possibly, however i had a split elbow going from turbo to induction kit, mafless system and it drove appalingly

have had that on this one too... although currently it's driving fine, bar the idle...
I only put the delete pipe on as the resonator box had a hole... ran fine like that too, oddly enough!

Something else has just occured to me, you say youve fitted the resonator delete pipe, have you blanked idle control take off or reattached?? Could be something to do with that? Have you checked idle control valve solenoid hasnt come loose? Culd have moved slightly giving the erratic idle, only needs to be a smidgen of movement and idle will be out.

If the idle control take off is the circa 1" diameter pipe heading back to the inlet then that's still attached...
should be able to see it in this pic of the delete pipe...


I'm a bit confused between the idle control valve solenoid and the actual valve itself... didn't realise there were 2 seperate parts. Is the beige thing (last pic in my first post, top right of inlet with grey electrical connector plugged in) the valve or the solenoid? that's the bit i was planning to take a look at tonight and clean out/soak with WD if necessary.

Yeh that looks spot on regards the idle pipe, the connector with the plug going to it is the solenoid, the actual valve is below it and attaches the the inlet manifold by 2 bolts i think?? there is a rubber diaphragm inside that will perhaps need replacing or cleaning, you can also clean the barrel inside the valve itself, usually caked in black muck, should be green after cleaning, or at least mine is?

well.. staerted the car up last night... and no sign of the high idle.
might give the solenoid a clean out at the weekend anyway as a precaution though.
