Question Brake judder....again!

Had this issue before, in fact I have changed my discs and pads twice in 12 months. Keep getting brake judder under heavy braking and especially if they're hot. I've even bought some more four pot calipers as one of my old ones had a seized piston. Tbh its pissin me off and it's happening a lot more now my cars had the Simtek fitted and mapped for obvious reasons! What could cause this, as changing the discs and pads only alleviates the problem for a short while!

As above change calipers to Brembo,Tarox,K-Sport or AP and your problems are solved..

OE 4pots are not the best calipers out there

|Gonna assume you are driving in a spirited manner, so the issue is likely to be hotspots on the braking surface (pad or disk).

If it happens when cold the disk is not wearing evenly, although judder when hot long term can cause this.

Decent disks and pads (performance friction or pagid are good and have always worked well for me) and looking to keep the brakes as cool as possible vented (but not drilled/slotted) disks are my faves.

Right ok then. Upgrading the calipers is off the list (at the moment) as I've spent a lot over the last few months and I've gotta start saving for the kids' Xmas prezzies! Not to say I won't look into it next year mind. Been looking on Aztec performance website at this grooved disc and kevlar pad combo. Think they will do me for the time being? Only been using oem stuff until now! http://www.superhids.co.uk/brakes/br...ront-set-.html

I would've gone for some plain brembo discs at 293mm and some Pagid Blue 4-2 pads.

Had them on my 205GTi-6 and they were awesome, expensive but awesome.

To be fair, I do give them a spanking, but the way I see it, the reason we all buy scoobs is because of our need for speed! Lol

Just been looking at brembo discs online. Why are they £66 on this site, http://www.nextdaybrakes.com/info-pa...0000&year=2000

Yet £260 on this site? http://www.haloperformance.com/Bremb...tails/4646-350

Am I missing something here??

The £66 pads are only standard ones so would not suit spirited driving , they would soon fade.

I can supply you our grooved front discs with black painted centres , and our kevlar sport pads for £99 plus £12.50 P&P , plenty of feedback on this set up as they are probably the most popular brakes on Impreza's , which is why we are the no1 ranked trader on here

We hold large stocks of these for a next day delivery

Cheers Ian

Ok then Ian cheers, sounds like I'll be investing in these on payday! Do you think this problem I'm having is reoccurring due to using oem discs and pads or do you think it could be something else??

Oh with regard to the £66, on the first link under gc8 it's states the brembo slotted discs for 98-00 are £66 for the front pair. Surely that can't be right for brembos???

They are cheaper than most, possible they could be copies, if at all unsure buy on a credit card for the buyer protection.

Might be because they are plain, all the ones you usually see are slotted and drilled.

As Ian has volunteered his services and offers a better pad than OEM I would give him a try first the Pagid pads are gonna be twice the price of his pads

There is no reason for your discs to be warping so easily like that tbh. my 03 blob still had the original discs on when i bought the car at 50k, there was no judder at all despite the discs being pretty tired.
I replaced all mine with godspeed discs and pads last year and they have been great.

IMO the bigger cause of brake judder, especially so quickly, is due to not ensuring the hub faces are prepped enough before discs fitting. Any small amount of dirt or rust build up on the hub face will mean that the disc wont be sitting dead flat to the hub, meaning that if you then start braking your going to quickly start wearing certain spots of the more than others, leading to brake judder.

When you fit them, wire brush the hub faces very well and clean them up with some emery and brake cleaner. I also then apply a very light film of copper grease to the hub - but dont apply too much, just literally a dab on your finger and spread it very thinly.

As above ,its also important to let the new brakes bed in properly before you give them stick.

I know exactly what your problem is and I also know exactly how to cure it!

I had the very same thing after fitting my K Sports.

Your hubs are not perfectly flat against the disc, which causes osillation. You wont notice this on smaller discs, but once you fit bigger discs the osillation increases and you feel the judder.

You got 2 real options: buy brand new hubs from subaru and spend god knows how much, or...

Give this guy a call and pay him a visit:

Marcus 07824 903 006 - expert engineer in brakes and skimming.

My brakes would judder all the time and get terrible when hot as you've experienced... after seeing Marcus it feels like I'm driving a different car! I'm so happy they dont judder anymore!

depends how spirited, i fried mine in very short order lol admitedly was the isle of man.

First question would be did you bed the new brake pads and disks in properly. Alot of come with bedding in instructions. dont follow them and they dont work correctly.

Just corrected my thread above as I had listed the price for our brembo discs and pads , just realised you have a classic , we can offer you these for £99 a set for our grooved discs with painted centres , and our kevlar sport pads.

With the classics , the calipers can cause problem seizing , which will overheat discs and cause warping , we see lots of these calipers in for reconditioning , all with the same problems.
I would have a look at these before fitting new discs on again , you need to check that all the pistons are free to move , it shouldn't take much pressure to move them with a screwdriver , just be carefull you don't damage the seal doing it.

We can supply you any parts for the calipers , from pistons , nipple and seal kits , to fully reconditioned calipers

Don't really know why Bob is still claiming to be the No 1 trader when he obviously isn't , we are

There's nothing wrong with running the standard 4 pots if you're driving a bog standard scooby, BUT the minute you start adding the most moderate power the standard brakes might as well not even be there!

I've experience terrible brake fade and times where you press the pedal and it just goes straight to the floor and does nothing... this is both classic and newage standard brakes.

Sorry but the 1st thing you do b4 adding any power is sort the anchors out as the stock gear WILL let you down!

If your pedal goes to the floor , its your fluid that has let you down , not the calipers or pads , I have rallied a classic Impreza that had the 4 pots fitted , with Ferodo DS3000 pads , and my own 294mm grooved discs and I never had them fading , and I used to left foot brake quite a lot
The last rally I did in it , I came first overall.

Your calipers would be the first thing I would look at

Cheers Ian

Alex

My Godspeed disk conversion and good pads (DS5000 and Pagids) running the stock Subaru 4 pots never let me down, this was when I first got the car and did used to try and follow the Cumbrian Scoobs on their outings

Steve VRS on here used to track his car on the same combination without grief.

Maybe your disk / pad/ fluid combination wasn't right.?

Ah Shaun but thats not standard Subaru brake set up!

I was only referring to the standard brake set up... you're talkin about bigger discs and far better pads (and I assume you've changed the fluid to Dot 5.1?).

I know a couple ppl running the Godspeed kit - bigger discs and pads and they cant fault them. I myself had them under serious consideration but went all out and treated myself to an all round set of monster anchors!

I'm still pending a pedal adjustment as my pedal is fine, but any beans I give it the pedal stops half way and wont return unless I flick it up with my foot or drive like Miss Daisy for a while.

I always thought bein a hydraulic system there was no adjustment on the pedal, but I'm told there is once a new clutch has been fitted

I've changed the fluid, cheaked for leaks... all checks out so really this is my last attempt at curing the problem...

A couple ppl have dismantled the clutch pedal and replaced it and cured the problem so that would suggest an adjustment there will solve it.

Failing all that I have a spare slave I can fit...

Had this happen me also , I never replaced discs and pads, it was a combination of dodgey bottom ball joints and a wheel bearing causing the judder. Might be something to look at.

When it comes to brakes, Ian Godney know's what he's talking about and his knowledge is backed by true motorsport experience.

The standard Subaru 4 pot is a good strong caliper, if they're sticking it's likely you could be experiencing those sort of issues, I had the same with my Scoob. I can't recommend Ian's caliper rebuild service enough, he did mine a couple of years ago and they came back looking brand new!
