I use to have 225/45/17 on my 99 classic and they would only rub with passengers in the back. I have since changed to 205/45/17 which is the correct size for a classic impreza running 17 ' wheels. A lot of classic owners also opt for 215/40/17 which are more readily available than the 205/45/17,either way both sets will keep your speedo in check, and cause no rubbing issues.

would a profile of 35 instead of the 40 you mention make it look better or just the the gap around larger and look worse? also are there any certain tyres you recommend for performance and looks?

35 profile Tyres will give a harsher ride due to the ultra low profile, regarding tyre manufacturers you make your choice. The P1/sti 5 & RB5 came with 17' wheels and all were fitted with 205/45/17 pirelli p zero's ,but Dunlop, toyo,Goodyear, etc are all decent makes.

I also had those wheels on my current classic, which had 215/45/17 which is a newage size i believe, before I changed my wheels & tyres.
Do you want a lower profile(35) to look good or do you want a profile that may aid the performance & handling of your car ???.

All you are going to do is ruin how the car drives, stick with 215/40/17's, if you want to lower the car then dont drop it more than 10mm, go for eibach springs and do it that way, trying to go 35 profile for instance will put your speedo out making it under read (ie you do 34 and it says 30, its illegal to start with), so go by the advice the guys are giving you, and note you may get some rubbing with people in the back, especially if you go too big or have the car lowered too much.

il go for the 215/40/17's, just which tyre now. my mate can fit them for me so il order a set off the web, im a student at moment so dont want to spend more than i have to and its not like i use the car on a track or drive it like a nutter, so out of the cheap budget tyres which one would you say are the best?

cheers

i had 215/40/17 and recently went up a profile to 215/45/17 - fills the arches better with 45's

Also worth noting that all 4 tyres have 7 mm of tread on them and cost me £190 balanced and fitted,so you are better off with a decent set of branded tyres, than a brand new set of budget tyres imho.

When I swapped to 17's, I Googled it and came up with a tyre size calculator.

It showed me that, to keep my speedo accurate, I should opt for 40 series in a 215 size.

Accordingly, I am now on my second set of 215/40 17" Toyo's T1 R's.

I really like them, they give decent ride, good grip and plenty of warning of their limits.

DO be careful about choosing a tyre size "to fill the arches"

Firstly, the tyre size is chosen to give the correct handling, grip and ride combination, NOT to look good. Secondly, it's chosen to give the correct speed readings.

Scoobs don't respond well to being lowered too much: it lowers the roll centre, which induces MORE roll, so poorer grip and handling.
It also makes the car look like a pimp-mobile, but hey..........if you WANT it to look like that..................

215/45s also work well, I ran some goodyear eagle f1s and loved them a good all round tyre
