Default Fuel Guage

Hi guys, having a problem with the fuel gauge recently. I filled up a full tank of V power and the needle only went up just under half, thought this was strange, the needle fell to under a quarter after driving so i decided to fill up again, the tank only took abit of fuel before the pump started clicking to indicate the tank is full, again the needle only went to the same point ( just under half way point). A friend of mine put in BP ultimate the other day and don’t know if that’s screwed it up some how but doubt it, any suggestions would be appreciated, cheers.

my needles a bit weird as well, fill the tank to the top, do 8 miles and its on 3/4 full then the next half tank takes about 150mile to empty.

Sounds like 1 of the floats have come off inside the tank, there are 2, 1 on each side. If you remove both the covers on the boot floor, next to the back seat you will see the bolts holding them into the tank. Best to use some of the fuel up first though

My car did this last winter, the needle would stick at half on the gauge until the tank was less than half and then gauge would behave normally. It was like this for a couple of months during all the snow and **** we had last winter.

I was going to take it into the garage to get looked at. Then during a spirited drive in the peak distirct the gauge jumped up to full and has worked ever since. So one of the floats must have just got stuck and as the car wasn't really used during the poor weather or if it was I was taking it very easy there wasn't enough movement in the tank to free it.

May be worth taking the car for a good blast???

Cheers guys, the needle is moving down very slowly so dont know how much fuel is actually left in the tank, hope it doesnt stop on me, will check out the floats though

I always filled my car to the top and reset the trip computer everytime. Once I reached 200 miles I filled up to the top again.

I typically get 230 to 250 miles per tank in my car so at 200 miles I always had a nice margin for error.

No need for a fuel gauge then.
