Could be the aux air valve needs a clean as it can get carbon build up inside over time and cause rough idle, another problem could be a split in one of the pipes on the inlet manifold.

Its on the throttle body housing and held on with 2 retaining screws/bolts and is easily removed,if you leave it soak without completely submerging the electrical part[only the plunger end] and also clean out the hole to which the unit came from and then try it again again.
It may take a little drive to settle it back down and find the idle point after refitting the unit so don't be surprised if it doesn't work straight away mate
Look around for a split pipe also and listen when the engine is running for a hissing noise.

It can also hunt if your maf sensor is fubar'd (remember this is an MY99 )
Always worth cleaning the ICV out too whilst your at it, but had this problem on my MY99 V5 STI type R, cured by replacing the MAF sensor.

My 99 type r just started doing this today. It just sits there bobbing up and down random.
Later this afternoon it went back to normal for a while, until I just put it away just now (the car),it's doing it again.

When I bought my 99 uk classic it had the same problem, it turned out to be the maf sensor.

Is there a video or thread anywhere with a guide to getting the maf out?
Every time I try the search function it always comes up with zero results.

Its easy enough though the screws are the security type, so it does help if you have a set of drivers that can do it then its just 2 screws, maf out, new maf in, do screws, reset ecu, all done

You can't do that with the MY99/00 MAF's, they are too sensitive, you could with the older ones but once these start doing the hunting, they are usually already beyond help

Dont know if the STi V5 have the same MAF's? but we tryed the brake cleaner & it was fine for a 'few months'.

Worth a try though, if not then just bin it!

They have a very thin element which breaks if it has too much vibration (normally from fitting induction kits ) or just dirt/oil deposits, and these are pretty cheap anyway, much cheaper than an engine rebuild with a dodgy one in there

Problem has stopped for the time being. As long as i can get till payday then order a new MAF to be on the safe side

I just thought I'd update this thread as my maf turned up Saturday.
I did what Tony said and swapped it and reset the ecu.Problem solved.
It runs much nicer now at low revs as well,no hesitation and well worth changing.

Cheers Tony.

So clean ICV and if that doesnt help change MAF?

I have slight idle rev variations and little hasitation around 2-2,5k but all works splendid over 3k.

I drive V6 euro classic.

Thanks for the help

Failed or failing mafs "end" engines. Cleaning it instead of replacing in some cases is the same as choosing between spending £80 or £2k!!

As above.

Can you get it to a specialist, and I don't mean a dealer?

You're in SLOVENIA?

I thought Slovenia was closed. There can't be many of you left, judging by how many are in my town

How can a country be closed? Try going to Holland, last two weeks of July, first two in August.
They are ALL in France
