Looking at the Subaru Diagnostics section P0600 - Serial Communication Link
DTC refers you to check out the complete LAN System, starting with whether or not SSM can communicate with the vehicle.
Also suggests there could be a problem with the Body Integrated Unit connector.(needs cleaning)

Yeah, that was my take on the issue also - P0600 is just too generic.
If however there's also a B**** or U**** code that would really help. For example U1223 in conjunction with P0600 would seem to indicate a VDC control unit malfunction.
Incidently Don, what version of the service manual have you got? Is it specifically for the UK model?
