Default Best Top Mount Incercooler?

Hey guys,

I've got a 97 V3 White Sti and was wondering about upgrading the Top mount to a better intercooler.

My only plans for the car upgrade wise is a new exhaust, standard air box with upgraded panel filter and a better top mount intercooler. I will then get it mapped to be sensible but fairly quick. I'm not trying to achieve crazy bhp and want the car reliable and relatively standard.

Thanks,

Shep.

STI8 intercooler is the best TMIC upgrade but for the mods you have planned its probably a bit of overkill. Your standard STI intercooler will be fine.

If you're looking for the best as opposed to the best standard fitment, try one of these by Hyperflow.

for the cost of a hyperflow then they just arn't worth it, can get a front mount for that price and get beter results.

It depends what you pay for the H/F unit in the first place.
And the OP did ask for TMIC recommendations.

knowing what retail is i cant imagine it will work out as cheap as a front mount. as far as op, yep fair comment, however uprating top mount isn't relay worth it imo.

I agree they are overpriced, but they work very well as far as top mounts go, and if you can get a deal on one it's an easy upgrade.
I wouldn't argue that a front mount is better.

On a new age its not really an upgrade, tests show that replacing the standard STI top mount can leave you worse off, on a classic it may be a good idea but its still silly money.

[quote=johnfelstead;10182594]The Chevron TMIC has been used for a few years now on 500BHP TA cars, as well as road cars.

If you want to get independant feedback on them, speak with Bob Rawle and Richard Bulmer, they have both mapped cars with these and have been amazed at how good they are.

There is a myth perpetrated out there that TMIC dont get good airflow at high speed, i've found that to be nonsense.

As to heat soak, the Chevron cores dont heat soak anything like a conventional cored IC, you can put your hand on them after they have been sat idling and the cores feel remarkebly cool.

The cores are nothing like any of the normal fare you find with these aftermarket IC's. You dont find anything but the best in terms of weight and eficiency used on modern F1 cars, and these cores are what is used on those for their heat exchangers.

These IC's are not cheap, but they certainly work.

Worse off? With a bigger intercooler volume, greater cooling surface area, and less pressure drop? Interesting theory, but I won't be going back

Yet still not rated as high as the STI intercooler
You know hyperflow only rate those to 350bhp dont you? the standard STI new age intercooler rates higher, its a bit of marketing bs that gets you to change them to anything but what Banny has pointed out, then your in big money territory

All the indications I have show that the H/F unit performs better than my old STi TMIC used to. I have been running it since the car was making 340bhp, but it handles the current output (440) with no heat issues at all.
