Default TD05 or SC36?

Hi guys, my car has started smoking at idle when its been sitting for a while. Have done compression test and got someone to check it over and the conclusion seems to be probably the turbo oil seals. I was half thinking of changing it anyway for something slightly more pokey so not the end of the world.

The car is an 02 wrx, coming up to 100k but has spot on compression, doesnt use oil or water. I know its a bit of a chance but hey he who dares Rodney

Just done cambelt and oil pump, fitted PFR7B's, leaky rocker covers ect.
Got an sti topmount and pinks sitting here ready to go. Car already has filter 3" exhaust and 6 pots.
Need to sort a walbro still though.

The dilemna now is which turbo to change to? I'm not really comfortable with buying a seconhand turbo unless I can be 110% that I'm not a,buying one with the same issue I have or b,one thats been ragged to within an inch of its life. For this reason I am considering a TD05 16g or possibly an 18g, not ones from the chinese cheapo copying corporation either. The other option is the sc36.

I am not planning to go nuts, maybe 330bhp? However, it may be nice to have a bit more potential for future tuning if something does let go and I have refresh the engine.

I would be really interested to hear from anyone who has fitted an SC36 in a similar situation to mine, is it worth the extra money? I like the idea of good spool as its mainly a road car. How to do these three turbos compare to each other in terms of spool up?

I did buy the TD05 16g, its the best turbo for the job apparently due to it not being laggy due to its small size and will give your about 330-340bhp. Again that is good for the gearbox in a WRX. I got told an 18g will destroy the gearbox and dont know too much about the SC36. My TD is up for sale due to me not having time to put into my car due to my business.

I'd go for VF34 / 35 or a TD05 16G.........anything bigger and you will lunch the 5 speed and clutch. In fact map the above properly and they likely will.

Have a look at Andy Forrest website

Forgot to mention its got an exedy clutch in there, found an invoice the other day looking through some bits. I'm prepared to take a chance with gearbox and not launch it. I had a PM conversation with someone 'in the know' and he seemed to think not to much of a worry at this level.

Wasn't really interested in the VF turbos as want to avoid secondhand.

Have looked at Andy's website and would probably go with him if I choose 16g. The 16g does seem to be the front runner at the moment, but would still like to hear of anyone who has fitted an sc36.

Most definitely SC36, the TD05 series of turbos is slower spool. Especially if you get yourself a billet SC36, excellent spool and power.

Hope this helps,

Graham

A sc36 is a TD0516g. Its a billet version. A sc38 is a 18g billet.

A SC38 be the one to get

Yes you're right my bad. Was thinking of the SC46 which is roller bearing. Is the SC38 roller bearing also?

Love the billet turbos!

I think the sc38 would probably be a bit to far, especially on standard box and internals. I'm slowly talking myself into an sc36, turbos all cost £400 if the mrs asks right

Engine mapper, have you mapped any of these on a 2ltr? Is there a big gap between an sc36 and a non billet td05 16g spool wise?

Obviously never going to get it spool like my td04 but keen not to loose to much response with it being a road car.

Thanks for the input guys.

Yes though I could not tell you an exact number in terms of RPM spool, but it is in the region of 500rpm. Which although doesn't sound a lot, is quite a margin when you feel it.

And just to complicate it further I have seen turbo dynamics selling new vf30s for £400+vat. Am I right in saying that although this turbo would acheive the power I am after it may not the best choice in terms of spool and response?

My tdo5 20g makes 20 psi by 3250rpm, plenty of low down power and torque, all the way to the redline too.
