this is from the syms trecs website

SYMS TRECS
TOTAL RACING ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM
I copied this information from syms website :
The idea behind our tuning is not to add unnecessary improvements in the body that is called the boxer-engine. The boxer-engine has to accommodate speeds over 125 mph or 201 km/hr without any feelings of stress to the engine. The EJ-20 is a high revving model that adopts the unique big-bore of 92mm as 4-cylinder 2000cc engine and it makes the most of the high efficiency by big-bore valve. Therefore, when it is over fueled, the big combustion chamber demands a very high accurate control at the moment of empty mileage and ignition for the prevention of knocking. For this reason, the decision SYMS chose was high-speed/high-accurate control system fine-tuned by a separate (body) ECU. The SYMS TRECS system connect up to the standard ECU by using the exclusive harness. On low load it works as an A/F feedback by the standard ECU. In high load it would be the D jetro controlled by the exclusive booster sensor and correspond to the high output. The SYMS data is built in each model (car), corresponding to the engine setup and the changed in data that is adjusted for specific needs of the driving conditions. When you change the data, it is possible to drive using the standard ECU. The fine adjustments of the booster and the regulation of heat is possible with the attached controller. Corresponding to ever model: The WRX/22B, Turbo Legacy, Forester by changing the SYMS harness.

it takes reading from ;
T.temp : air temperature
a / f : air fuel
boost*
t.water / water temperature**
knc / knock sensor****
In picture 3 you will see the controller where you can adjust how much boost you want, you can also adjust how much fuel you would like at different revs.

In picture 4 you will see the air temperature sensor which looks like a lead weight you usually attach that to your Intercooler
In picture 5 is the water temperature and air fuel ratio.
In picture 6 is the boost sensor
In picture 7 you can just about see the yellow block connector, you plug your wiring loom into one side of the yellow block and from the other side you connect the Ecu, and also the wire that connects to your knock sensor .

It is a very useful piece of kit that takes data readings from different areas from the engine so it can perform at its best but in a safe mode.
It works like an Apexi power Fc apart from this syms trec system takes more reading and is more adjustable

Symms have been around tuing subaru for way longer than Simtek afaik. Jap brand and very popular over there. These find their way over occasionally - havent seen one myself yet but no doubt has some good parts and bad parts.
