Default Break or Repair??

My 1997 STI type R has sh*t itself. HG gone

I have been considering my options.....

Repair it or break it.

Not sure how much money could be made breaking tho??

Looking at spending 1.5k - 2k on repair (Including uprated parts, ie oil pump, ARP bolts, Clutch and flywheel, Timing belt etc..).

If i broke it id buy another one which could have the same problem

I had this problem, owned the car for 6 months and started knocking its **** off. Ended up spending a lot of money putting it right, much to the dismay of others with their "you could've bought a minter with that" comments. But as you say, whos to say this 'minter', won't go bang within a month then you're back to square one. Verdict: Fix it!

Repair for me. atleast you know that your getting decent parts fitted and can see that the car is getting fixed, rather than buying a new one and not being sure whats under the bonnet.

Its all about cost though and how deep your wallet is.

if you were to break it the bit thats worth the most is knackerd, the rest of the car tends to go slowly and you would be lucky to get good money for it.

So repair any day as long as the rest of the car is in good order its woth it, enjoy.

BTW where can all these ppl find a good type r for £1500? let me know and ill have 4 of em asap.

Ok guys that settles it, i did want to repair it but was having 2nd thoughts, i think now ill repair to a high standard (Dont do any jobs cheaply not worth it ).
Rest of car is superb/mint and only 87,000km on clock.
I do love the car aswell

Will just have to see how deep the wallet is (Or how deep the wife will let it be ).

Anyone know where to get the best parts at a good price. I have priced everything from GG,flat4 and RCM, which are all quite pricey but the best (Dont mind paying good money for good item but price seems to differ drastically for the same item).

I will be buying:

Cosworth Head gasket set.
Cosworth Timing belt kit.
Cosworth Oil pump.
Water pump.
Exedy Clutch and flywheel (''Aztec performance'', really cant find cheaper )
ARP head bolts.

If the wife dont mind ill also be havin (Long shot ):

Cosworth Pistons
Cosworth Rods
ACL race Bearings

repair, if you love the car like i do, repair it,
you can buy WRX for a grand or there abouts, just for the engine, but as stated what about in 6 months ???

mines in for a rebuild now, i could just buy a WRX swp engines and be happy, then break the rolling shell etc and make money back, but what if the new engine goes ?? do it again ??

so i'm having mine repaired, just to be on the safe side..

Update guys..

Thats the Type R built again now. Its been a slow process but got there in the end (Quite a job ).

Heads skimmed and pressure tested.
New Head Gaskets.
New Oil pump.
New water pump.
New thermostat.
Full new gasket set.
New clutch.
Plugs leads and filters.

After refitting engine to the car she turned over right away

Car seems to be running perfect now with no issues.

After taking it for a run is it normal for the top radiator hose to be quite hard (I have never been paranoid about it before so never bothered to look? There is nothing returning to the expansion tank.

I also have a very small oil leak from R/H rocker cover which drips directly onto the manifold (The seals on the bolts i suspect) (i will be repairing this on my next days off).

Anyone replaced head gaskets and had them go again shortly after Just my mate was saying he did his and 2 weeks later hg went again??

If gaskets go again that quickly is likely to be either heads or block not true or fitted and torqued down incorrectly
