Teeth broken off 5th gear would be my guess. Have someone drop the oil, the gearbox plug is magnetic, teeth will be stuck to it if my guess is correct.

I took it to Paul @ Exteme Scoobies. He took box apart and put some bits in (Sorry not too techy think he called it a 'gear set') Wasn't too bad cost wise and was defo worth it.
It was driving me mad! I think it can also be a loose nut that can cause the same problem inside there instead. My box was fine up until then and only gave the problem after I changed the gear oil!

Looks like the parts were just over £200, not sure how much the labour was as I had a new clutch and new rad done at the same time.

Hi Steve, had exactly the same on my 02wrx about 12 months ago, only 3rd to 4th. I changed the gearbox oil for some fresh syntrax and it was right as rain and has been ever since.

I know there is obviously a syncro problem or something in its early stages but haven't seen the need to do any more about it.

Perhaps try an oil change and see if it helps? It may well not do anything but its a cheaper starting point than having someone pull your box to pieces! Its easy enough to do on the driveway.

Hope that helps some.

As Matt suggests, try an oil change using Subaru gearbox oil.

My Classic WRX 5 speed started playing up at around the 60k service and I could not get it into 5th without crunching unless a very slow change combined with matching the revs.

I assumed it was the gearbox and mentioned it at the following service (Subaru dealer) when they changed the oil and it was right as rain. Had the car serviced at Powerstation at 140k (this is not a dig at Powerstation!) as I was having other work done and they used their preferred oil for the gearbox and all of a sudden the gearchange was seriously pants, even worse than before

Unfortunately, PS are a long way away to go back for them just to change the oil to something better, especially as I was looking to sell the car, so I took it to my local dealer and, again, it drove like new.

It turns out that the Subaru gearbox oil was the one to have.
