Anyone used octane boosters?

People seem to swear by them, but I've had different results...
I have a MY00 car with PPP and it only drinks Optimax (because that's all I put in it ). However, I started adding Millers Octane +, as people seemed to get good results with it. However, although the car ran quieter, it was running lower boost and didn't feel as quick ! Even an ECU reset didn't clear the situation.
I've now gone back to pure Optimax and am much happier again . No idea why this should be (perhaps just running too rich?) but I now have some spare Octane booster . I might try switching back again in a couple of tankfuls just to confirm my findings.
Cheers
Richard

I have a box of Millers, as yet untouched, that I keep in case I get caught with no Optimax or equivelent. My Link ecu was mapped using Optimax.
Will someone confirm or deny: 1) Octane improver retards the flame front during combustion thus allowing ignition to take place earlier, the std. ecu taking advantage of this and advancing the ignition.
2) Some of the advantage of more advanced ignition is lost by the slower burn rate. (Although torque might benefit?)
3) If the ecu is at its max. ignition advance and there is no det.using "straight" petrol, then there is no advantage in using octane improver, indeed if the burn is slower, it could result in a lower power output.
Perhaps someone with engine development experience would like to comment on the above as I`m sure there must be a lot of people using improver needlesly with maybe just the "placebo" effect?

I put some Pro-boost in a couple of weeks ago, (with Optimax), and found that a) it ran smoother and b) it didnt pop and bang so much
Dont know about boost cos I cant read the rather eratic digital readout of the boost controller!!!
I have gone back to Optimax only.
Cheers, MD.

Thanks all, I think I better stock up as after buying my WRX today I have since discovered that the nearest garage with super is either Peterhead(11 miles in the wrong direction) and 32 miles to aberdeen from my house so would I be safe if in an emergency I had to run 95 ron with octane booster?

In an emergency I have been told you can run 95 without Octane booster, just drive like you have an egg under your right foot & avoid the turbo coming in if poss. I have done this once with my STI & no problems, obviously use just enough to get to a garage & remember the next tank will be a mix so avoid loads of wellie until you are on second or third tank.
As for Octane booster, try it, I think you will notice the improvement even when you run it with super

Run on Optimax and Silkolene Pro Boost 500ml/tank - smoother and seems to have more go with the boost. Then had to use a tank of SUL and extra pro-boost followed by tank of optimax and one "Hotshot" booster (from my local "Motorspares shop) about 3-400 ml per bottle (cos I couldn't get pro-boost) and then back to optimax and normal dose of pro-boost. On this tank my peak boost rose by 1.5 - 2 psi and 5 tanks later is still peaking about 2 psi higher than originally !!!
I would be very interested to know why !!! Ideas ??
