Default car completely cuts out at 100-120 mph ?

hello just bought my first scooby yesterday i am over the moon with it, its a 2000 turbo 1998 model..

well firstly the cars drives perfect boosts up nice.. 1st gear lovely, 2nd great, 3rd lovely, actually in fact all the gears are nice, but when i go at her hard and acccelarate hard, when im in like 4th or 5th 100-120 the whole car just Jolts literally like its bouncing off the limiter once. it will pull me in the seat like its cut out but for like 1 split second then it continues up to like 130 perfect, im so confused the car is great upto 100-120 then it like cuts out but then if i keep my foot down after backing off slightly shift down and accel it goes to 130+...

im also scared because i dont know what missfiring is like but i dont know if it is or not :S its fine up to like 100, it goes like a ****in rocket..

if anyone can help would be great !

yours very very confused :S, Jamie.

It may turn into something serious if you keep changing down at 120!!!

On private roads of course.

but seriously if it has got a delimiter could that be faulty? causing it to to seem to cut out as it would pull back but then it work again sort of like a glitch?? or is that completely stupid and should i just stop trying lol

It sounds like boost creep to me, had a similar issue once or twice in my sti a year or so ago, would go to overtake someone in 4th and would cut out for a moment.

The standard ecu will cut fuel at 1.3 bar i belive , maybe less on uk turbo i dono. try cleaning the boost solinoid with some brake cleaner (take the hoses off put to test mode and spray some in there with it clicking away, there are guides on here as to how to do this, involves plugging a couple of big electrical conectors under the dash together to enter "test mode") , also check the pipes to and from manifold/boost solinoid are all ok, no splits etc etc.

if you have access to a boost guage try hooking that up to see if your reaching 1.3 bar or there abouts , the standard car i belive should make 1.1 (tho i could be wrong on this)

Dave.

Overboosting causing the car to fuel cut.
Yep fit a pressure gauge if you dont have one and see what pressure you are running at.
If you have just got it, does it have a MCB fitted. (a lot of people fit these and screw the boost up without doing anything else)
If it nearly puts you through the windscreen it is fuel cut.

I wouldnt go for a FCD if you are not sure i would fit a mcb and a pressure gauge (if it doesnt have one) and screw the boost down until you get the right pressure for your ecu.
Check link below to find what boost your car should be running.

Get it to a specialist for a rolling road check. Then the boost can be checked along with the fuelling. It will be the safest and quickest way of finding the problem.

My Uk classic had a mbc fitted and the boost wound up and it I used to get that nasty fuel cut, feels like hitting a brick wall! Overboosting, hence a few months later I had a full engine rebuild. Take my advice if ya wanna save some serious wedge, drive it steady til its diagnosed or you could be facing a hefty bill like me!

hmm perhaps the cars boost has been turned up? maybe if im getting boost cut its over boosting because the boost has been turned up perhaps?, being honest the car really doesnt feel 220bhp seems more. ive driven 230bhp cars before this is a lot quicker?? :S hmmmmm..?

In all honesty mate, i think you should look into getting the car set up to support the mods you have fitted. Ive seen a few imprezas like this which have had a lot of stuff added without getting it mapped or set up to suit. The favourite seems to be increase the boost and dont touch nothing else . If thats the case you may be driving a timebomb.......

My mate bought one years ago (sti) and the guy said it was ''tuned'' to 360bhp
He took it round to show me his new beast which seemed very impressive until she fuel cut at around 100mph and he said it always does that but he doesnt mind
I fitted a boost gauge and it was reading 1.5Bar with no other mods.

im guessing thats what this **** has done then, i thought it seemed rather nippy for 218 or so bhp lol... i dont know where to start though because i would really like to find out what the problem is before i spend all my cash on her.. i guess i should try cleaning the boost solonoid thing out first.. then what next? any recommendations to see why i could be getting a fuel cut at high speeds/high rpm its only at like high speeds it pulls great in 1st,2nd,3rd,4,th etc but when it gets 90+ its will fuel cut at like 5k+ revs then if i back off plant it again it continues accelarting fine with no fuel cut :S...

cheers!

take it to a specialist with a dyno for a full once over. find out whast been done to it, what needs to be done to make it run right, either it be a fault or not mapped etc etc.

as said dont dry to drive through it or drive it hard or you'll end up needing an engine rebuild.

You'll probably find the boost is around the limit. When I was daft enough to use the bleed valve mine came with, I set it up just under fuel cut limit and during 'spirited' driving it was fine until under load in 4/5th then it would happen. It needs diagnosing if you're sure there's no bleed valve on there. As I say just cruise off boost til it's sorted or you'll be facing a hefty bill like I did!

This does sound like fuel cut, I experienced this with my car shortly after I changed the exhaust, air filter and fitted a bov when I was running the standard ecu, it felt like I was hitting a brick wall, a bloody horrible experience.
