If its not had a HG then its going to be most likely that as the early cars had pretty crap gaskets compared to the later cars, or if your really lucky, its the rad thats collapsed on itself as its a damned sight cheaper than the 1000 quid for getting the HG done correctly still I wouldnt drive on it until you resolve the issue as if it is the rad then that could knacker the HG's which will leave you with a bill 10 times as much as you wanted to lay out in the first place

Check that both fans are working.
Check that your radiator is not partially blocked (like with mud) especially at the bottom.
Check that you have no airlocks - at the least pull off the small top hose from the radiator to the header tank when filling up with coolant.

erm well when i brought it i dont think he was using coolant, i think he was using water as when i drained it water was mucky (rusty lookin) and i cleaned it out put coolant in, both fans are working.
i drove the car after puttin coolant in (let it run for half hour) didnt overheat on idle then i toke it down road and then it started overheating.
thanks for the help lads

Has the coolant pressure cap been checked?
If the cap is damaged or the pressure relief valve has blown the system wont hold pressure, this would cause the coolant to boil.

Not sure on how you are driving this but you could try.... drive the car and keep it under 3k revs (no boost) and see if it over heats, if not drive it again and pull some boost and if it does over heat...head gasket....
