Hi mine does exactly the same mine is a 92 wrx overheats in traffic or on tickover sat on the drive after a while. Only one of my Fans work so that is probably the cause of my problem but i just have not got it sorted yet. it could be a similar problem with yours it one of those things you have just got to trial and error

If its not had a HG then its going to be most likely that as the early cars had pretty crap gaskets compared to the later cars, or if your really lucky, its the rad thats collapsed on itself as its a damned sight cheaper than the 1000 quid for getting the HG done correctly  still I wouldnt drive on it until you resolve the issue as if it is the rad then that could knacker the HG's which will leave you with a bill 10 times as much as you wanted to lay out in the first place :(

What, if any thing did you do to the car just before it started over heating?
Or has it just started out of the blue??

One fan is for the a/c and the other for the coolant radiator, so only one will work unless the a/c is on.
Have you bled the system properly to release any air locks??

Its an engine out job and 2 heads to change, 550 is cheap but was that just one head they did or did they do both? and their labour costs must be 20 quid an hour ;)

Actually, the more correct naming for the fans is main fan and sub fan. One will come on if the A/C is switched on but both will come on when the coolant gets hot enough. Verified by observation and from the workshop manual.

Check that both fans are working.
Check that your radiator is not partially blocked (like with mud) especially at the bottom.
Check that you have no airlocks - at the least pull off the small top hose from the radiator to the header tank when filling up with coolant.

erm well when i brought it i dont think he was using coolant, i think he was using water as when i drained it water was mucky (rusty lookin) and i cleaned it out put coolant in, both fans are working.
i drove the car after puttin coolant in (let it run for half hour) didnt overheat on idle then i toke it down road and then it started overheating.
thanks for the help lads

Has the coolant pressure cap been checked?

If the cap is damaged or the pressure relief valve has blown the system wont hold pressure, this would cause the coolant to boil.

Not sure on how you are driving this but you could try.... drive the car and keep it under 3k revs (no boost) and see if it over heats, if not drive it again and pull some boost and if it does over heat...head gasket....

scoobywrx92 26 May 2011 06:32 PM

i didnt drive it with boost i did keep it jus under 3k, sayin that i think i do have a problem with the cap i seems to leak????
