Quieter Backbox?
Not long bought my WRX RA and I love it!
Only problem I have is the guy before me put a full 3" exhaust system on it, then topped it off with a 5.5" tail pipe with no baffles.. The only time you can talk in the car is when its idling.
Ive been looking at the HKS silent hi power backbox, and im sure it would fit my needs, only problem is its a bit expensive for me..
Any other alternatives?
Cheers,
Tredy

hmmm... shame yours is a classic and mine is a newage mate - i would offer a swap for my prodrive exhaust - 2.5", sports cat first, decat second, and prodrive backbox - MOT friendly too
Anyone else out ther who might fancy a swap though... (sorry for the Hi-jack )

Has it been remapped? If not then swap the whole system for something more suitable but if it has been mapped then just swap the centre pipe and backbox for 2.5 items and use a adaptor to mate the decat to the 2.5 centre.

It hasnt been remapped, and yes id love to replace the whole system but funds are an issue at the minute, thats why ive limited myself to replacing the backbox.
Edit - What would the problems be if I were to have a 2.5" bore fitted to the current 3" system?

I have a RaceBox rear section & afterburner middle 2.5" straight through.
It's super quiet inside, but great on the outside, nice burble and sounds like an expensive sports car rather than a boy racer with a broken backbox!!

One company: Hayward and Scott. They do custom exhausts all for very good prices (and a lot cheaper than HKS) but extremely good quality. A lot of the BMW M cars use Hayward and Scott, as well as Porsches and many subaru owners opt for them too as they're one of the best around. If you tell them what sound you are after they'll help you out.

Haywood and scott are not cheap, they charged me £25 for 1 3" s/steel flange on its own. They are round the corner from parents house. But on the flip side i think they give you a warrenty on the work they have carried out for as long as you own it. I know i few people have used them for welding, without any probs. Seen lambo countach in there being worked on.
I am running a HKS super dragger full decatted and it aint that loud i can send you link on youtube if you like.

Is it something like the above you need to convert from 3" to 2.5" so a quieter / cheaper back box can be fitted ?

Not cheap.. just cheaper than big brands like HKS. For a turbo or cat back system they are similar prices to an equivalent Milltek system but imo slightly better quality. Both Milltek and H&S come highly recommended amongst impreza owners.

I've never heard or read a bad word about them and they're one of the most recommended brands on this forum by subaru owners and many other car forums which I've been a member of over the years. They've always been extremely helpful post service with me and other members, always getting back to me immediately. Every company is not perfect though however this is one of the most recommended makes you can get.
They do custom exhausts, so are not "off the shelf" like some brands, meaning you can ask them exactly what you want and they'll make it to your specification. When I was there a while back they were hand making them in the workshop at the side. I really wouldn't discount them, and all that for the same price as a Milltek.
Milltek is another brand to go for which is relatively quiet but with a nice burble and you could also try and source a second hand Prodrive backbox which is even quieter. HKS will be very good quality but quite pricey and a fair bit louder than the Milltek. As mentioned above, cheaper makes are Cobra and Ninja which are very good value. Not sure on how loud they are as I've not heard one but quite a lot of members have both and rate them. Good luck though in your search.
