Hi,

The engine light lit up on my dad's '03 WRX the other day. He took it to the local dealer, who diagnosed it as a 'bank 1 sensor', and quoted £250-£350 to replace it. They cleaned it (with an air line or something - I'm working on 2nd hand info here ) which fixed it for a day or two.

I'm assuming it's a lambda sensor they're referring to (best online price I can find is £27+VAT ). I'll put it on my own diags on Sunday, when he's in the area.

My main question though, is whether I could find a suitable replacement lambda locally (eg at a scrappy) that would tide him over until I can get a new one fitted. IIRC there are 2 or 3 different types (in general) - does anyone know what make/model of vehicle I could take one off as a temporary measure?

The sensor you are refering to is actually the FRONT A/F sensor (wideband), not just an O2 sensor, and the price quoted is about right for Subaru UK supply.

Edit: Got it - Air/Fuel sensor

 

The newage ECU is a bit picky when it comes to the front 02 / lambda as it's a pseudo wideband jobby and does not like non-OEM units. Breakers often have them in, try Scooby Bits or Scooby Spares

Thanks for that... Hunted all around Dunfermline for a suitable sensor-removel socket, before going into a factor's, who gave me one for nothing cos NGK provide them free every so often.

 

Hi there just don't fit Bosch Lambda sensor,Bugeye(or all New age) use only Denso Lambda Sensors and i don't think NGK will work on New age Subaru(with this i mean your car) and you will waste money as well

Denso lambda sensor from eurocarparts mate £130 that's where ah got mine just 2 week ago bank one heater control circuit was the fault on a53 wrx same sensor as Subaru different price tag Subaru wanted £303 or sumit silly

 

Sounds like exactly the same thing. You don't have the part/item number handy, do you?

Nope... the one above is the rear 02 sensor and checks on the efficiency of the cats, what you need is the "Front" 02 sensor.

Just looked at the eurocarparts link above again..........hang on, the product description does not match the product title as the Rear 02 sensor does not talk to the ECU about fuelling, that's the front 02 sensor. Might be best to ring but £130 for a front 02 sensor is a cracking price.

 

Yeah, ECP are listing 2. The one I linked to says it's "in front" of the CAT. The other one (at £88) is "after catalyst"...

I'll dig out the recipt for mine in a bit I work in a dealership albeit ford so got the parts department to do a bit o digging n eurocarparts was spot on denso sensor in a denso box spitting image of the one that came off exact match

 

If you use europarts use discount code WEDDING30 it should get you 30% off, not sure how long the discount is running for or if its just over easter.

aslong as you use the denso sensor you should be ok as the oem 1 is a denso i got 1 from ebay for £120 good luck removing the old 1 though they are right *******s to get out

a/f is air/fuel not airflow the airflow is behind the airbox on the intake pipe

 

Is the lambda sensor on a bug eye wideband or narrowband?? I was told to get a separate wideband sensor for tuning mine as the oem one is narrowband?

OEM newage is a pseudo wideband........ so basically a narrowband, for tuning you really do need a real wideband sensor.
