Arrow 98 STi - added cat back exhaust, do I need a remap?

I know this question seems to have been asked a lot but im new to scoobys and cannot find a specific enough answer for my particular situation.

I have a 98 V4 STi, I bought it with an Apexi backbox and air filter.

Ive just added a 2.5" stainless centre section which eliminated the standard centre silencer box for a bit more grunt from the exhaust - but have seen I may need a remap to accomodate. The car seems fine and isnt boosting any more that it was before (I have a blitz DTTC with a max boost reading on it).

What are the implications of me not getting a remap? If any?
Where are good places (in the North West area) to get one?
How much are they?

Thanks for your help and apologies for the noob questions.

Ash

You should be ok, but with all JDM cars I would recommend adding gauges or a KS3 to monitor what the engine is doing as these cars are mapped differently to UK ones and have a more agressive map and are more highly strung when it comes to changes from the standard spec

Tony

PS, google KS3 if you dont know what it is

Thanks Tony, much appreciated the response there.

Ive looked into those KS3's and TBH i think they will just make me even more paranoid than I already am about the car!

I still might get one though. The exhaust is the first time ive spent money modifying the scoob. So far ive only bought things to make sure the cars safe! I already have oil press/temp gauges a boost gauge and also the aforementioned turbo timer...

Its good to know that what ive done is not a total "no no" though and im not going to have any major issues. Thanks.

I take it a decetted section for the downpipe would then require remap?

Can 98 ECU's be remapped, I read somewhere they cant???

Imho it most likely should be mapped.

However is it possible to check it to tell you.

The 97/98 requires a replacement ecu to be mapped yes (apexi, simtek, syvecs etc)

Well JGM, my most cost effective solution here then would be to take the pipe back off then. Because the cost of an ECU plus a remap, hardly warrants me wanting a bit more noise from the exhaust does it?

It will cost me about £1000!

When you say it is possible to check and tell me, how do you do this? And how much am I looking at?

Thanks again,
Ash.

You sould not need a remap if you are just replacing the centre section of your exhaust, and as you say will allow the gases a speedier exit from your exhaust, so leave it on and leave the normal downpipe on and you have no worries come mot time..

However quite a few classic owners decat there cars and have no running issues so the choice is yours. I decatted both mine(uk cars) as well as 4x wrx imports up to 2 yrs ago and all running ok up to now
