Lads and lasses, what next? Currently my car (03 sti)has prodrive sports cat, revolution 3 inch cat back, walbro fuel pump, uprated sparks and a K and N panel filter and was mapped. What should I do next if I want to liberate more horses from my car. I want something that will still be reliable too. Advice on further mods and costs would be great. Please help!!!!

A few bhp to come from swapping the exhaust for a set of headers, but serious improvement will need a bigger turbo, IMHO.

The 400 bhp comes from a certain tuner having achieved this figure using a fully forged engine, which being stronger allowed the compromise to work well for a road car. IMHO.

Some swear by them, others swap to a FMIC as they approach 400 bhp as they like the look/feel it's a better solution.

We had a customer come down to us from Norfolk recently.
New age STi. Stock motor. We fitted RCM headers, SC46 turbo, Perrin front mount and an induction kit. Injectors of course. Customer and missus stayed in hotel for two days and saw the sights.
Martyn mapped with Ecutek. 440 bhp, really good spool, very happy man indeed.
Possibly cheaper deal with cheaper front mount, although the turbo is a must.

Depends what you want and how big your wallet is!.

With the above mods/mapping your car should be making 320-340bhp on decent fuel.

If you want circa 400bhp then a bolt on turbo would suffice + possibly a set of GT spec headers. Your standard injectors will suffice, you already have an uprated fuel pump and possibly fit an adjustable fuel pressure reg which will allow a little more IDC head height for your mapper, if required by, raising fuel pressure.

Going FMIC route is a waste at this level when the newage sti top mount is more than capable IMHO.
Also fitting a FMIC can come/not always with addition issues when running MAF with regards to drivabillity. Some people go blow through to alleviate this issue.

My own car ran a FMIC on an OEM ecu and was nothing but hassle.

The MD321H, 20G etc seems to give good results on your engine. Second hand 20G's can be picked up for reasonable money and should make circa 380 and are not too laggy on a ej20.

It depends what you want but 380-400 is a nice figure for a road car and does not start to get stupid with prices/mods/reliability. Oh you may want to factor in a new clutch also at some point......

Thanks lads some really great advice here, the car has 44 k on the clock and is not abused. I'm looking for something that I can have fun with and it will mainly be a road car. Would be great too if i could run 2 maps one for economy and one for fun. I do about 260 miles a week in the car for work, 130 miles each way twice a week.

If you exercise a bit of self-control your car will be more economical after a re-map. Unless you are really enjoying it.

You have the wrong car if you want 2 maps, only 1 subaru to date has that capability and its not a UK car
You can have a high/low boost setting though, but is it worth it really? or you can go aftermarket ecu, but that adds serious wonga to the equasion.

There are gains to be had by fitting a fmic right from 320bhp onwards.

Just because you 'can' get to 400bhp on the sti tmic doesnt mean you would want to and you would nearly always get fair chunk more power (and safety) with a decent fmic

Steve IMO your shopping list should be:
- turbo (something decent like the MD321T or SC46 billet)
- fmic
- fuel pressure reg

That should get you over the 400bhp mark 8)

I would swap the injectors and forget the fuel pressure regulator if heading past 400 bhp !

A simple re-map will get you "more", it's just a case of how much you want to spend.

Agree.. if injectors won't flow enough for the planned power, fitting a fpr to try and bridge the gap is not worth while.

ideally world injectors and a fpr (needs to be a decent one - fuelab or sx or aeromotive etc, see too many of the cheap ones that are worse than the oe one) but just injectors works perfectly and leave headroom etc..
