Please bare with me .... Classic 1998 Turbo
I have had her for 6months now , ( r reg 1998 2000 turbo , guessing its.a my98?)
I had her for two weeks and broke her, I shot the Gearbox to bits and crushed front wings, and had gradually knackered starter motor, I have had her standing in grade since and until last month turned her over and drove up the yard and back, now the starter has died I am sourcing and sourced parts to fix her up. Life story over lol
I have been looking at servicing and modding while its on going, I was thinking of doing bigger injectors, (440 I guess, unless can do bigger) if they all fit in and not much hassle. A knn or similar panel filter, wrx Gearbox, a cat back system ( like the ebay jobbies and change to prodrive back box?) Maybe sports cat, poss a t05 turbo and remap.... However from my very basic knowledge of this model (I always seem to pick the wrong models in my car history) I cannot be mapped unless I have a 'chip' is this correct? And I also wondered if I could use my unichip to map as I have one floating around from my abandoned super charged escort project

You can't chip it! Any one offering you a chip will blow it up!
You can't get away with putting an air filter on with out a singed ecu. Air filters knacker mafs, knackered mafs blow up engines.
Also leave your bov as the standard Subaru ones.
For now, think along the lines of full exhaust system, panel air filter, magnecor leads and njk 7 plugs.
Where are you based? There maybe a specialist near you who can go over things with you.

Maf's on these are different to the my99/00 cars which don't like too much change (induction kits and oiled filters), your screwed for the ecu, aftermarket only I'm afraid.
You can normally get away with the full decat but in the winter months when it's colder you may suffer overboosting.
Apart from that, your very limited to what you can do on this model year car, brakes are worth looking at, 98 uk cars have crap 2 pots, 99's were a better all round car (except the maf sensors ) as these had mappable ecu's and better brakes/suspension setups and a slightly stronger gearbox.

If you search, you will find.
JGM - www.jollygreenmonster.com is the most well known on here but it depends where you are in the country.
Engine swaps yes, but not with a VAG.
Most popular swap is a 2.5 from a version 9 onwards with the 6 speed gear box.

I mean, search scoobynet.
Try engine builds, conversions. 6 speed box in classic. Modding uk2000.
Hopefully someone with a big spec classic will see this and point you in the right direction.
Also search through the photogallery, then you can pm someone with the same car.
Good luck and welcome to the world of chasing bhp and being totally broke

Big spec classic at your service
Seriously, I've owned my 98 car from new.
First "mod" was a TSL Group "N" backbox, soon followed by the same company's full decat system.
From there, I've done the brakes and suspension, with Godspeed Brembos on the front under WRX 17" wheels, and STi Brembos on the rear using Godspeed's fitting kit. Brakes are a MUST DO on the 98 car, unless they have already been done, the stock brakes are AWFUL!
Suspension started with solid droplinks, better bushes, a 22mm rear arb, and an anti-lift kit, all Whiteline, courtesy of PowerStation, who also did the BumpSteer mod and 4-wheel alignment, again, money well spent.
In 2009 the tired shockers were replaced by BC coilovers and the alignment redone, this time at Carnetix.
Five years previous to that, I'd had a LINK ecu fitted and mapped by Bob Rawle, another very respected mapper.
2009 saw the demise of that engine, however, after some daft driving on French motorways in 40 degree daytime temperatures Knock killed the bottom end and it came home on a trailer
The car now runs a 2.5 conversion, bigger turbo, MUCH bigger injectors, FMIC, proper induction kit, (LINK ecu runs MAF-less), and six speed box, all done by Darren at Harvey Smith in Darlington.
Power is now around the 400 mark, with similar torque, hence the need for the 6-speed box. The car will drive virtually anywhere in 5th, and will spin all 4 wheels in the dry at 80 in 4th! It is stupidly fast, since it only weighs 1250kg.
There are too many other mods to list, all declared to my insurers, including interior, gauges, spoiler, splitter, lights etc.
Thinking about what I've spent on it brings me out in a cold sweat

Cool thanks everyone for the pointers,
I gradually am working through the site reading everything trying to take it all in
Sorry last few things ,
so far working out budget for the ecu 200 - 900, apexi seems good, and the simtek top of the game. I'm guessing changing to the maf and ecu from a v5 would not help ? And are the prodrive ecus mappable (never knew about ppp on a classic til now lol )
Just found some info on the prodrive and they aren't, shame mate had one floating about :'(
