Default 6 speed gearbox conversion - HELP!

Hi everyone

This morning, 3rd gear let go on my 2006 WRX (running 350/400). It's rattling around the bottom of the box somewhere at present - not pleasant at all to limp back home!

Anyways ... I'm likely to go for non-DCCD STI box.

But my question is, will I need a remap to cater for this?
And will the different ratio box have put any additional pressure on the engine?

Cheers

Lee

Out of interest how long did you get out of the 5 speed box with the figures you were running?

I was told not to go over 350 ft lb on a standard 5-speed box.

Dunno, mate, I was going from a tuned classic to a more highly tuned 2.5 conversion, and got advised by three respected tuners to go 6-speed........so I did.

By all accounts the later 5 speed boxes are tougher anyway than the earlier boxes.

Looking at a UK non-DCCD, just awaiting info from 2 suppliers on here and complete pricing which will ultimately be the deciding factor

At least I'll have sorted a major problem and tuning problem on the car, which does open more doors further down the line now Let's face it, I won't be selling the car anytime soon now!!

Don't forget to use the matching R160 rear diff ratio for the new 6 speeder.... your car will have a 4.111 rear R160 diff, which will not match any 6 speeder.

Guess it depends on how you drive them. I'm running around 300bhp/370ft lbs, and have done so for almost 4 years now and about 45k on the clock, including trackdays, with the standard clutch, with no problems.

That said, I've got a 2005 UK DCCD box, R180 rear end, 2004 STi Rear Hubs, prop, rear axles, and a DCCDPro all ready to go in when my engine gets done.
No point leaving the WRX box and trying for 450hp/480ft lbs

Im sorry that I appear to have accidentally turned your thread into a 5 speed one Perhaps we could have some sort of sticky thread of the various levels people have run on their 5 speeds and for how long till it let go? Seems to come up a lot.

Its certainly gives me plenty to think about for future tuning options.

Hi Lee,

beware of anyone trying to fit a std. 2.0 STI clutch to your 2.5, they won't take that torque for long, try and source a 2.5 STI clutch at least !

Hope you get your gearbox issue sorted Lee. Its an expensive one when the hawk WRX gearbox lets go.

It always seem to happen in 3rd gear as thats the gear in which my mates failed. He just put in another hawk WRX gearbox into it and said 'ah well I will just drive it easier now' but I think he was missing the point.

Is is not possible to get the gearbox rebuilt with stronger internals?

I've been waiting for a quote for a full day and not had my calls returned yet. There's an option of fitting it myself (I've sourced some ramps about 200 yds away!!) but would prefer to let someone else do it as I'm flat out at work at present....

I knew it was going to happen, I just really hoped it wasn't not! I did limp the car home (about 7 miles) using 1st, 2nd and 5th only, wasn't much fun!

I considered rebuilding the box but the price itself bt would still limit me to the clutch available for the 5 speeds and I don't know of any that can take 400BHP + without changing the full mechanism. So 6 speed is the only way forward for me with an uprated clutch as per Dunx's post.

To be honest, there's only really the top end to change and the car would be practically an STI now .... !!

Car has gone in this evening - collected from my house on a car transporter and tomorrow getting quite a bit of work done...

STI hubs, shafts, rear diff, 6 speed box, exedy stage one clutch, new clutch mechanism, I'd bought some STI rear brembos so they're going on tomorrow with new discs and blue stuff pads, and front red STI brembos being replaced to match the rears in colour.

Service this far has been more than I ever expected from a company, I can't wait to get the car back - I'm sure it'll be as good as new

I'm convinced the low life scum that stole the car twice who ragged it from stone cold (as caught on CCTV) buggered the box. I've only had the car back a week...! It's been driven safely by me so going to speak to insurance tomorrow about it.

Yup - sorted! Car is almost ready - apparently the ABS ring bust when he took the rear discs off so it's put it back a little bit. But can't complain - a lot of work and helpful advice/recommendations plus collecting/dropping off from Leeds to Fleetwood!

Yup, Andy at ScoobySpares. Absolutely top bloke
Was originally going in for box and clutch only, but ended up getting hubs, shafts, new discs, calipers and pads, fluids and a load of good service

Car will be back tomorrow and cannot wait to test out the new config
