Default Manually read ECU error code(s) on 02 Impreza?

The check engine warning light came up on my Scooby this evening and I was wanting to manually read the code(s) to get an idea of what's going on. I've found some articles like http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.p...gECUCodes#toc3
but I can't find any black connectors and the green connectors only have a single wire to each. There is a single black connector with 4 wires going to it and a white one with ( I think ) 4 wires too which is making me think this article relates to slightly earlier Scoobys than 02 ( or is my wiring messed around with? ).
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone and is there a way to manually read the error code(s)?

In my short time of Subaru ownership I have gathered that the process you're describing is for classic Subaru cars and for the new generation you will need a code reader/diagnostic reader.

You can read the codes via the OBD port under the steering wheel section matey.

Where are you based?
