Default engine noise on start up hot or cold

I have a turbo 2000 and it makes a very brief noise in the engine on start up. Idles quietly enough. If I lift the bonnet and I rev it from idle, I briefly hear it again. It is like a knock or rattle. When driving all fine, though the engine seems a little harsh about 4500, though maybe that is normal for one of these.
Had the car 4 months and it is not getting any worse.
I myself probably would not have noticed it and assumed it is normal, but a Subaru dealer reckoned it was crank related but are they scaremongering? They reckoned £2000 for fitted new crank.
Cheers

If it was piston slap the noise would (should!) go when the engine is hot. If it's there hot and cold it could well be bearing/thrust bearing related. This is assuming you've eliminated rattling heat shields etc? Try to get a second opinion from a Subaru specialist and drive the car very gently.
