Could be an airlock, have a search on here for how to remedy it efficiently.

So,you tested the Stat and it opened up when you put some water around it from the microwave (normal tap hot or kettle water doesnt usually make it open) ??

The weird part is,the symptoms point to stuck shut stat, yet the temp gauge was normal, yet the bottom hose was cold so the stat hadnt opened.

As said,if steam was visible then water must be leaking.

Water pipe to turbo? As Dunx has said they get a lot hotter than you think.

Change the thermostat anyway.

What power are you running. What header tank cap are you running?
