Engine Bay knock
Alryt guys ive been on her with so many problems its untrue i think ive just bought the sh*tist scooby ever!!! Anyway a faint knocking every now and again not too loud really has appeared today from the engine bay roughly around the middle of the engine but only now and again. It isnt losing power or anything and seems to be running very well still. The only thing is i hit a speed hump quite quick today(probz about 20-30mph) as it was well hidden and ive only noticed it since then. Anyideas what this could be???? Thanks in advance.

Right.... for a start mate get it checked asap!!!!! Don't drive!!!! Mine did the same and i am now 3/4 way through a £4500 rebuild!!!! Could be a slight (cheaper) problem and you may make it a big problem (expensive).
I mean it could be hopefully a smaller simple problem but it isn't worth the amount of money you could end up paying.
Honestly go to a specialist and get it diagnosed bud..... let me know what happens,
Cheers Jamie

if its in time with engine revs and not road speed, then its deffinately on the engine.
could be anything from the rollers on the timing belt, to ancillaries (alternator, A/C pump) to something on the bottom end failing like cranck thrust bearing, or big ends, or piston slap.
Get yourself a youtube account if you dont aleady have one and put a short video on there using your phone. will still be difficult to tell exactly what it is, but it may help someone on here identify the problem.

my old saloon had the exact same thing. started knocking but drove fine.
i am guessing your puting in about a litre of oil every 500 - 1000 miles too? (I was)
eventualy the noise got louder. mine didnt do it when cold (Cuz oil is thicker) but did it when warm. eventualy it started doing it while cold.
never pulled the engine out to see what the problem was, but I was thinking crank main bearing or thrust bearing.
prices out there for bottom end rebuild seem to be about £1500. and if your doing that, you may as well have the top done too.

well check the pulley anyway. its the whole not doing it cold then doing it when its warmed up thing that makes me think its on its way out.

to be honest with you mine isnt that bad at all its more of a lighter knock if anything but the heatshiels underneath the engine on the headers i think it was - was loose so i tightened it and its got better shall i try and tighten the pulley up or will i wreck something?

well, mine wasnt that bad either at the start !
yes, tighten that pulley up and while you are there, check for anything else lose. also check belt condition. any unusual wear/damage and you will ned to replace it and investigate further

i know this sounds thick but how would i tighten it up?? and should i tighten the belts up aswell how do i do it? Thanks very much Andy for all your help upto now.

crank has a big nut in the centre. put the handbreak on, put the car in 1st and use a socket with a long arm to tighten the nut. If it wont tightn any further, then something else is wrong

Make sure you havnt hit the oil sump . You may have damaged the oil pick up pipe inside. It may be cracked and loosing oil pressure. Sounds like you may have a big end gone there if so. Eeek. Hope not. Hard to tell without hearing.
