Default Valve clearances

I have the heads off my v4 sti and would like to know the best procedure for checking the valve clearances? As the belt is off and cannot carry it out as per manual is there another way? Do i just have the cam lobes pointing straight up and then check?
Cheers.

Refit the cams and torque up, then rotate cam pulley to check clearances :-)

Easy enough to do by eye.

Line cam up so the lobe is pointing at same angle as bucket, i.e measuring at the lowest point of lift (valve closed) and measure clearance.

For best (most accurate result) you should do it with the heads torqued onto the block as they will change if you bolt them down after measuring.

Don't forget to torque cam caps down prior to measuring.

Daz, change of subject, in the projects thread did you use 2.0l heads on the sleeved 2.5l block? If so did you machine the heads to suit?

No I used completely standard V5 STI heads and cams. I just use a thicker (1.6mm) head gasket which did the job perfectly well.
