Safe boost to run at? W reg uk turbo
Hi all, i have a W reg uk turbo, going to fit my boost gauge tomorrow, what psi should it be running?
Its W reg, well maintained, fully stamped book, and is a uk 2000 Turbo wagon, no modifications.
Also, how do you turn the boost up on these? And a safe PSi to run at please?

should run at about 0.6 Bar, i had mine running at 1.2bar just under boost cut, but i would recommend staying to a Bar or slightly lower.
1.2 Bar was fun though, 13.5Sec 1/4 at Pod
Engine didnt like it after 18 months bottom end gave way, so make do with a Bar i recon.

Std boost is .9 bar IIRC.
You don't turn them up. Period!
if you want to run more boost, then you need to get the car remapped so that the other parameters such as fueling and ignition are appropriate for the increased boost. For the best results, you would be looking to change the exhaust, filter, fuel pump and then remap. Should see 270+ bhp and similar torque on the std TD04 turbo.
Just cranking up the boost on these cars is a recipe for rebuild..... in which case, I recommend

Did you read what NS04 wrote. He ****'s you not!

I havent tried to hide the risks... i even said mine went pop after running 1.2Bar for 18months.
I'm sure the OP can make an informed decision for himself if he wants to take the risk.

I have the same a W reg UK wagon same as yours and std boost on a td04 is about 0.9 bar.Which in std terms makes for quite a quick car . Listen to the other post above ,a manual boost controller will cost you peanuts,but will almost certainly cost you more in the long run . My car is currently running at 1.3 bar safetly,as it was remapped and checked and can run this boost all day long . If i had opted for the cheap option of a boost controller the engine would have gone bang quite some time ago. I personally have witnessed this when my mate inserted a chip into his ecu .It raised the boost to 1.1 bar and went like a rocket.

OK, let me clarify... i wasnt saying go do it, it will be fine. Nor did i say dont do it as it will blow your car up, i merely said, thats what i did, i had an absolute blast, which is kinda the whole point of owning a subaru, and didnt regret it even when it did go belly up.
If everyone did the same thing, no-one would have a sense of individualism, and life would be rather dull and boring.
I have bought two other imprezas and a legacy twin turbo, and havent repeated the rather un-wise modification... but in no way do i wish i hadnt done it on the first one!

Pretty Good Compromise
As emphasised by the others, i will reiterate, cutting corners and saving money on cheap tat sounds appealing at first, but costs much more in the long run!
(But its fun while it lasts )

To the OP: If this is what you want to do then take the MBC with you and the car to a rolling road and have it set up. The operator will be able to see the AFR in real time, he'll set it for you. Once fitted, tested and set do not be tempted to play with the boost setting.
