Question Re: Strange Engine Noise

Hi,

My brother has a ver6 STI and he's just noticed a strange noise from the engine on cold start up... I've listened to it also.

On cold start up from the turbo side of the engine is an intermitant rotating or pulsating metalic grinding noise... if that makes sense?

I've tried to pin point it and it sounds like its coming from the rocker cover?

As soon as the car is driven and warms up a bit the noise goes, but its very noticeable b4 then.

Its just had an oil change with Silk Pro S 15/50... I thought maybe the oil pump wasnt working right and the oil wasnt being pumped to those parts in the rocker and thus the grinding??

Any ideas?

Thanks
Alex

Could very well be a cam shaft cap has run dry and picked up alittle bit thus causing the noise on cold start when the oil is thickest.
To be honest though mate 15/50 is abit thick any way,id be going with a 10/50 imho

Thanks for the advice... or even 10/40?
That oil was for my car which is running much more power and higher temps, but my bro swiped it off me, lol...

A dry cam shaft cap... whats the process involved in fixing that problem or is it just the oil being too thick and not lubbing it up enuf on cold start?

From what I know about pistonslap I dont think its that...

I may give my bro's car an oil change with some 10/40 and see if that helps as you are right the 15/50 is probably too thick...

gave it an oil change with 10W 40 and didnt cure it...

Crawled under the car and discovered it was the casing around the lower drivers side pulley wheel agaist the wheel/belt.

Changing the timing belt anyway so will investigate further then, but looks like not as bigger problem/worry than 1st thought
