On the UK wrx's produced between the Model Years of 2001 and 2005 they had a cat fitted in the up pipe (3 cats total), it will be for that, pretty useless on any other model tbh.

The up pipe along with the de cat down pipe just help the turbo spool quicker and will produce more power.
Fit them all together and make sure u get new gaskets. Re map will be needed after fitting.
It connects to your headers and sometimes there a nightmare to fit. Good luck

If you have a bugeye / blob then just leave the up-pipe pre-cat in place along with your EGT sensor. For the flow needed to spin a small TD04 it makes little difference if you remove it.

If you get a bigger turbo then it's best replaced to improve airflow to the turbo and also the eliminate the problem of the cat breakinmg up and lunching the new turbo...

Bug shouldn't need mapping as the ECU will adjust, no real gains in BHP though you will get more noise and quicker spool. The WRX left the factory pretty much crippled so as not to encroach on STi performance. Newage WRX's do respond well to re-mapping
