Default Knock, Knock

Wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction to find the knock sensor on a V2 STI?. Had the car stored for a while, inside, started up regularly. Went to start it up to go out for a drive in the sunshine, and the CEL light is sending a fault code of 22 (knock sensor) immediatley on start up. Any idea's on fixing or repairing would be most appreciated!!

Thanks Andrew

Default Knock sensor

Looking at your engine from the front it SHOULD be on the top of the block on the right hand side of the plenum air intake. Look behind the manifold (intercooler off) and you should find it. Small round item held by 12mm headed bolt. Tricky. Obviously some wiring too. Small white plug normally. hope this helps.

Try cracking the bolt off and do back up very lightly. often to tight.

Just undid the 12mm bolt and it was silly tight, and I've just nipped it back up.. I've had the car 2 years and not had a problem before. It looks like the original sensor, so maybe it does need replacing??. I've disconnected the battery for a few hours to clear the fault, and I'll try it again tonight

Ps. are these sensors expensive??

Can be expensive. Not sure how much now. Good second hand is the way to go maybe. Be sure you get the right fitting though. Seen the bolt snap off before. Apparently can make it oversensitive if too tight. Worth a try for nothing. Ha.

Well I backed off the fixing bolt and cleared the ecu. Started it up this morning and no CEL light. Does this mean it's cured or does the car need to be driven to see if all is well??.

I've bought a good second hand knock sensor just incase!!

Looks like a bit of a bugger to change

May be intermitent . Drive and see if I were you. May come back.
To change is a bit awkward. Get some long nose pliers and drop into place with bolt in. Then carefully do the bolt up. Not easy for anyone really.

CEL light is back on!! ( Code 22 - knock sensor ), looks like I'm going to have to change the knock sensor. Is it easier to take the tmic off to gain access to knock sensor connector?.

Any advice or guides to fitting would be greatly appreciated!!

You can do it with the intercooler in place. When re-fitting the new one, put a bit of weak adhesive to hold the bolt inside the knock sensor hole. You need adhesive that's weak enough to allow you to turn the bolt but strong enough that the bolt won't fall out when the knock sensor tilts as you attempt to fit the bolt into the engine block (it will tilt since usually you are holding it by it's wiring lead)

I think I used a little bit of superglue the time I changed mine. You could also lightly glue the bolt to the spanner you are using instead. You need to use a socket wrench with a long enough extension.

Thanks for that, where does the wiring go?, cant seem to find the connector?. I need to take the tmic off because it needs rubbing down and re-spraying anyway.

Thanks Again Saiklon!!
