I just had my 2004 WRX Wagon serviced and an undertray came loose as I drove down the M3 this morning. It appeared to happen twice, let me explain.
Driving down the M3 I started getting a sound of plastic scrapping along the floor, I pulled over but could see no tray hanging down. All good I started off again and got the same noise a bit further down the M3, this time I could see the undertray that covers the gearbox hanging down.
I drove sensibly to Camberley MOT Centre (http://www.camberleymot.co.uk/) where they kindly put the car on the ramp, pointed out I was missing a lug to hold the tray in place and zipped tied it in place.
My questions are is there an undertray between the main one and the gearbox tray as there is a gap? If this happens again what are the implications of removing the tray altogether? My thoughts are I'm not and none but would appreciate the advice.
Long story, simple question. Thanks.

No, the rear of the main tray and the front of the gearbox tray are secured by two large grey clips that must be put on the right way up. Sounds like the service garage either left them off or they didn't 'click' back on properly or even (tried) put them on upside down!

For everyday road use I would definately retain the tray. It protects the not just the sump but on the Impreza engine there is the exhaust manifold, oil filter etc. under there. In addition, it cleans up the aerodynamics under the car.
