Default ecu swop?

Is there any advantage in swopping the ecu with one from another classic subaru? ( wrx,sti ect)

my current car is a classic 2000 98 plate.

no there is to much involved to do it, if you want a bit more power try and find prodrive ecu for the same year car, other than that you would a new and other mods to make speeding out on a new ecu worthwhile

The MY97/98 cannot be mapped. Swapping to a mappable ecu can be done but is expensive.

Cheap option as mentioned above is the Prodrive ecu from the same model year but even that is not a straight swap. The Prodrive ecu was supplied as part of a package commonly known as PPP (Prodrive Performance Pack) and consisted of;

The ECU obviously
Decat centre section
Prodrive back box
Silicone intercooler Y pipe
Panel air filter
Mintex brake pads

All of the above are required to match the mapping of the ecu (except the brake pads obviously)

Have done the above twice resulting in a much more driveable car with slight increase in power and a larger increase in torque lower down the rev range.

Other things that make the car feel quicker are listed here https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...p-classic.html

Final tip. If you choose to aquire a Prodrive ensure it comes with it's matching immobiliser found behind the dash on the drivers side, along with the transponder from the donor vehicle's key. Without the above the vehicle will start but then cut out after 10 seconds.

Thanks for the advice. I have a full decat system, induction kit and equal length headers. i think the prodrive ecu will compliment thos mods.

sorry but the prodrive ecu will not work with these mods one bit, the prodrive ecu is set up to the exact mods the ppp car came from the factory with fitting mods like equal lenght headers, decat and induction kit, it will cause you problems and maybe even possibly a new engine, the ppp ecu really doesn't like anything from the norm.

I dont want stupid power. The limit was around the 300bhp mark because i still want to keep some reliability. Would a chip suit these mods or will a esl daughter boared for a remap be more worth while? would the extra cost be worth it?

The ecu is a from a 98 reg

there is no chip available to fit it, and the ESL daughter board is still in waiting, how much longer they will take who knows, other than that its after market ecu

As above the Prodrive ECU does not like the front cat missing and will defo not give 300bhp. 240 to 260 according to who you believe. I believe the lower figure, still a cost effective improvement over standard.

Best way for you to go would be an aftermarket ECU, but it will cost......

Good luck

Swapping ECUs from one car to another is very unwise. The ECU in your car is specific to your car and if the ECU can be mapped it should be mapped to the specific requirements of your vehicle.
If your car has an ECU that cannot be mapped then the answer is an aftermarket ECU and the actual choice of aftermarket ECU will depend on model year and what you want to achieve. The idea that you can take an ECU intended for one car and fit it to another and get it to operate efficiently is a grave falacy that could result in engine failure.

It seems the early classics are a little easier to tune with a chip but i understand that a mappable ecu is best. Im now in the position where i leave my state of tune where it is or to get my desired power figure and spend a lot of money on a apexi ecu and map.

You wont get 300bhp on your engine set up, your turbo isnt capable of making those figures, more like 270bhp, then a decent ecu setup is circa 1-1.2k fitted/mapped.

I have the same problem as OP ,it works out cheaper to sell the car as it is and buy another car that can be mapped or has been done already.I have been waiting a year now ESL board and no news yet

Look for something like a secondhand Apexi Power FC or Simtek but remember you need the mapping cost on top to custom map it to your car. Also consider a new Simtek for around £800 plus vat fitted and mapped.
