A main reason for engine failure can be because people run them on std uk fuel(95 ron) opposed to the 100 ron fuel in japan. If you buy a 2000 model year it is possible to have it remapped for uk fuel, but if you opt for a earlier model then use the either shell v power/ tesco momentum with a shot of octane booster once in a while should see you ok. I owned a 1997 gtb and had no probs whatsoever, just make sure you do regular services and look after it and it should be ok imho.
