Default Over heating in cold weather!

Hey guys took the sit to work today and noticed it was very high on the water temp, it is very cold today and wanted to know what the possible problem is, also what would be the best anti freeze to use? It's a 1997 sit cheers

Where you on the move or stuck in traffic when it heated up.

If stuck in traffic it could be the fan or fan sensor.

Is your car using coolant and is there any white gunk in the water tank or oil cap?

Sounds like the water in the rad. froze as you were driving (chill factor through the rad could easily be -10 lately!) The water in the engine gets hot and the thermostat opens but the water can't flow due to the frozen water in the rad. so the engine overheats! Stopping and letting the heat soak de-freeze the rad. possibly saved some damage!
Sounds like your anti-freeze is weak. Need to change it for a new, strong mix.

Check the rad end tank for hair-line cracks!

OK banjogt - They're all being very polite, so I'll ask.

Are you dyslexic

Given the op's reply this would be my no1 answer. Had this myself many years ago in an Opel Manta GTE.

Hopefully no damage done

Would it really matter if he was? Sadly ther are people out there who struggle with spelling or reading for that matter and are embarassed by this, especially when comments like the one you just made (even though it was made light heartedly!) re-inforce this fear to them.

If it was a female the car would already be in a garage as no woman could possibly know where to put anti-freeze let alone know what is was

wind-chill factor does not effect inanimate objects, that includes radiators and water

+1. Sounds like a car that may have had its proper service schedule ignored.

Buy a anti-freeze tester, they are only a few quid. Should have at least four discs floating for a good 50:50 mix, any less is too weak.

Not only does antifreeze prevent freezing, it stops the cooling system from corroding. If it is too weak or hasn't been changed for 3 years it goes corrosive and basically knackers the cooling system (seals, rubber, copper, aluminium, you name it, it eats it).

(coolant change intervals on late model new age cars are 5year intervals IIRC as they use longlife coolant and contain less copper, whereas on a MY97 cars it is 3 years)
