Default WRX V1-2 Top mount upgrade?

currently runnin de-cat and esl mapped at 1bar but got a set of 440cc injectors to fit before re-map, but understand the stock intercooler isn't safe after 300bhp?

are V1-2 STI intercoolers any different? if not, what other top mount would fit with-out major modification? aiming for around 320-340bhp, dont really fancy a front mount.

I take it you have an early WRX? What year? Ill presume its currently got a slanty type intercooler, and your after an STi slanty intercooler.

They are marginally different, no better at cooling, possibly the tiniest bit better flowing due to a different pipe design on the underside.

Best bet is a V5/V6 topmount, flow wise about the same (as with any tmic before it) but the V5/V6 are by far the best at cooling. TMIC after these are the way to go but near enough impossible to fit to the early engines.

youll also need to adapt an undertray for your bonnet scoop or put a facelift bonnet on.

Iv used an V5 STi tmic on mine coupled with a 2004 under tray and it works a treat. Might be selling it all soon to go FMIC

the early sti's had a different inlet pipe and the end tanks were slightly larger that's about it, i was in the same situation as you and went front mount in the end, i didnt want to but to get any decently usable power in the summer its the only way unless you want to bodge a later sti top mount on, its up to you.

Thats when i did it to mine. Id keep it as Its working fine at the mo, just get paranoid about heat soak, and the chance of air missing the bonnet scoop at high speeds
