Exclamation TY754 5-SPEED... YOUR EXPERIENCES !!!

Can people tell me what turbo/power/torque they're happily putting through the above 'box and for how long... without it failing (thus far, obviously! )?

Also, stories of those people where said 'box HAS failed too i.e. turbo/power/torque/anecdotal situation, etc...

Cheers.

450bhp/380ftlb was ok for a couple of years, before I swapped it for a 6 speed for future proofing purposes. I don't do drag starts though.

Encouraging.

I'm currently having mods done to my STi 5 at API to achieve, hopefully, iro 380/380 +. I also don't do drag starts AT ALL. Always get it rolling fully, before any hammer. (I am also aware of the element of 'luck' or 'fate' though... )

Any more contributors? Keep it coming...

Currently running over 400 of each on the same box with a 20G, dont have a figure as the car has never been dynoed but it's enough to max out my 550's.

Also ran similar power but with less torque on my 2.0L with a 752 box for a year and a half with no issues, only swapped to Fat Boys 754 as I knew the extra torque from the stroker kit would be enough to destroy the 752.

Mechanical sympathy goes a long way.

I ran a TY754VN4AA for a full sprint and hillclimb season, prob 20 events, with a 2.0L and a 16G prob just over 300bhp and similar torque, was def not sympathetic to it and it was launched all the time. Next year I used it with a 2.5 forged engine and 20G so prob just approaching 400bhp and maybe similar torque again used it for around 8 events and again launched it at every run and it was still going strong when i removed it. That said others have had boxes break at much less power and taking much better care of it. I ytreated my box as a consumable when i had the 20G on and was amazed it lasted.

David @ Api will tell you there is no defined level a gearbox will take, it depends on how you start from a standstill and aggressive manner of gear changing. But saying that something in the middle 300s bhp to 400bhp the gearbox seems to last for a period of time.

Also add in the element of LUCK, which seems to be the biggest factor.

If you are wanting to drive a 350-400bhp car to its potential, then expect gearboxes, clutches, drive shafts to fail

Also, salient question: what clutches are you all running? Mainly OEM and OEM flywheels...?

As mentioned above luck is the only common factor. The TY754VN4AA was from a 05 Blobeye WRX and I was running an AP 6 paddle clutch and lightened flywheel at the time, sounds like i got a good one

I'm running a TY754 - etc (V5 STI RA Ltd). I've always wondered what torque these could take as I've always been told they area stronger box than the earlier models. Will the front heliptical (spelling) diff cushion the blow at all?

At a guess I'm somewhere eitherside of 400 hp/lbsft. Runs at Sants Pod/ pulls a caravan but not at the same time obviously. API originally fitted their 5 speed heavy duty clutch/lightened flywheel but it just didn't hold the power, it is possible it was a one off but David sorted me with a 6 speed version, thats on my 754 and the clutch hasn't blinked.

Is that the 6-speed's clutch or flywheel? Or both?

The MY99> TY754 5-sp has 8 bolts holding the bellhousings together (as opposed to <MY98's 4 bolts)

But not sure what else is different/stronger?

No problems thus far with it? (I assume so, if your first post is anything to go by? )

None at all, not too bad considering I picked it up second hand for 50 quid

It only had a few hundred miles on it though so was more or less just run in.
