All of the 53 errors are related to the factory fit transponder-based immobiliser. There are eight possible options on an Impreza and the only way to find out for certain which one it is would be to connect the car to a Select Monitor (or 100% compatible emulator).

Incidentally, if you've connected the black plugs and found the 53 code stored, if you don't know otherwise it may well be an historic code that's been hanging around in its memory since who knows how long. You'll know if it's actually been triggered recently as the symptom you'll notice will be that the engine will turn over, fire and then immediately stall, with either or both of the Check Engine or the little key symbols flashing afterwards.

any ideas of the above how to you find a fult on a classic abs system
Either a process of elimination or, again, diagnose it with a Select Monitor. Did the warning light come on immediately after your fuel mods? If so the obvious thing to look at would be the possibility of you disturbing something in the pump area. Other common cause, especially on an older car, is a wheel speed sensor failure.

also how to you reset and air bag light ?
Fix whatever's caused it to illuminate.

When you checked the impedance of the wheel sensors, did you check that the resistance fluctuated when the wheel was rotated?

Also as far as Deepy's instructions to query the ABS ECU, make sure you're counting pin 6 correctly!
